Author Topic: Lasermax vs. Crimson Trace (Read 7120 times)

I have a SIG 228 in 9mm, and my shooting buddy has a 229 in .357. His is stock, but mine has the short trigger and night sights only up front. I like the bar-dot config, so I only changed the front sight.

We do shooting at the range, but these guns are also our concealed carry defensive pistols. We are both considering adding a laser. The Crimson Trace has a grip activated turn-on which would seem natural. Someone else suggested this was bad since under stress one might squeeze to activate the laser and accidentally fire the weapon. The Lasermax has a switch on the end of the take down lever.

Anyone out there on the thread have experience with either of these sights and have any advice or comments?

No experience with lasermax but use CTC on my guns and love them. I highly recommend them.

I think both are good for plinking or hunting but I don't think I would want either one on my conceal carry gun. Just more to hang up on clothing, something else to go wrong when you really need it, and it will take additional training to prepare yourself for using the laser in a self defense situation. I also pack a 229 on occasion, the factory nite-sights work great for me.

Take a little time and bounce around on Jeff Cooper's site. He did a lot of experimenting with laser sights several years and wrote articles for "The National Rifleman" on his findings. I think he would agree with my comments.

There is most certainly nothing about a CTC laser grip to hang up on clothing. I nearly puke at the mere mention of Cooper. If he's for it I'm against it. You couldn't pay me to read anything he says.

Sorry to answer so late but I've been traveling quite a bit.

I have a CTC on my 226 and I can easily hit pop cans at 50 yards or more. In fact no one will even try to compete with me on a 'dueling tree' when I have that gun....

I suggest that anyone interested in the LaserMax should go to the site and read the customer's stories (testimonials). They are really quite impressive. I personally have not used either, but it just seems to me that it is better to flip on the switch when I actually need the laser than to have to point, aim, squeeze, and pull trigger at the same time. What happens if you don't want the laser on, but squeeze the grip enough to turn it on, and make a target out of yourself. Seems to me the LaserMax has better control.

With the CT's if you have the "on/off" switch turned on, you just reach for your gun and with a natural,shooting grip you turn on the laser.. Nothing to hang up, no unnatural grip. Even with a laser grip of any sort, if you don't practice in both the on and off mode your a fool! The laser is an aid and shouldn't be your only method of sighting.. Low light or out of position shooting lasers are great..

Tried both. CT is more natural but harder to properly line-up. LaserMax is, in my opinion, more accurate since there is less room for error.

I wonder why I have never had/seen a need for either? Is it just poor breeding or idiocy on my part.
Now you folks can use em if ya got em but I never got the fever.
