Now it does not happen every time but when I shoot my .223 handy of a rest it will break ejecting the spent cartridge in my face. It has never happened when I have shot it free hand. Just wondered if anyone has came across this?

Those times it doesn't happen, the difference will probably be in the fact that the breech wasn't pointed at your face when you opened the action. Good luck and good shooting.

I bet I misread this one. You are saying the action breaks when the gun goes off? Only thing I can think is that sometimes we don't snap the barrel fully closed while seated at the bench, especially if the rifle is new and a little stiff. All I can think of at the moment.

26 Are you closing the action the same way whether you are shooting from your shoulder or off a rest? I don't see why the action would spring open only when shooting from a rest and not from the shoulder if there were something wrong with the gun. About the only think I can suggest is making sure the inside of your action is clean and lightly lubed.

There are a few things going on that could cause this. First, it sounds like you may be resting the rifle too close to the hinge point. Try resting it a bit further forward. Second, as mentioned, you may not be closing it all the way. You may also need to make sure the barrel latch mech has been thoroughly cleaned. Sometimes this means taking it apart. Metal shavings have been found in there that hamper the latch mech and keep it from functioning properly.

It doesn't happen freehand because you have upward pressure on the forearm when holding the rifle and it keeps it closed.

You have to close these with a firm motion. Don't be too gentle, you won't hurt it.

No matter what the cause it should not be happening! Do a good cleaning and if it persist, send it back to NEF/H&R for repair. That's what warranties are for.
