How to change barrels on a contender?
« on: January 27, 2005, 07:39:42 AM »
Hi guys.  I'm a newbie to the contender scene.  Just bought a used contender (not the G2, but the older style) with a .223 barrel.  Then I got a barrel in .30-30.  Both are 14".  Because I bought a used gun, I didn't get a manual with it.  I've contacted T/C, and they are supposedly sending me a manual, but I don't have it yet.  And I've asked the Support Center here, with no reply.  What I'm wondering is, how do you change barrels on this gun?  I'm planning on a trip tomorrow, which will include some range shooting.  I'd like to try both barrels.  Can somebody tell me how to change them. . .or is there a link to an article or some other resource?  I'd appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Unscrew the forend.  Gently tap or push out the hinge pin in the frame.  Remove old barrel.  Intall new barrel in reverse of these instructions.

If it is a very early one be careful that you don't lose the small trigger guard (tang) pivot pin Mine fell out on it's own the first time I did this .... later models don't have this problem. Also I open the action before pin removal . Be careful cause this is the process most responsible for excess scratches ... Even put the piece on a pillow the first time till ya see how it works....

When reattaching the forend do not torque the screws.  Just screw them in till they are firm.  If you crank the screws down too much it will loosen the dovetails and they will always want to fall out of the barrel.

I have a manual sheet at home.  I will try to scan it and post it here tonight.

I keep a wooden dowel of the appropriate size in my gun box. Use one about 3" long and save on bruised fingers when you tap it with a screwdriver handle. I don't have any scratches on my t/c frame and like it that way.
