Smallbore MS in Memphis, TN area
« on: January 27, 2005, 02:21:30 PM »
I was shooting the bull with Nomad earlier this evening lamenting the fact there seems to be little to no SB MS in the greater Memphis area, soon to be my new domicile.  That opinion is based on surfing and review of the normal match schedules.  BUT!  Just maybe, hopefully, there is a quiet group just waiting for a sucker to try to get something started?  At this point the closest thing I can find is the boys in Benton, AR which is 2.5 hours away.

Anyone have any ideas?

Incredible that a city that size seems to have no SB silhouette but that seems to be the case. I would make the drive to Memphis now and then if something ever got started. Memphis is flat and sprawling, surrounded by farmland. I wonder what shooting ranges/clubs are already active there. It seems to me that Memphis would be a terrific potential market. Perhaps you can be the man who got something started. Until then, perhaps Mr. Dawg will tell us what's available in Mississippi.

PS: You know, for that matter, the topography is the same right across the river in Arkansas without the large city crowding things. If land had to be purchased that might be the way to go. SB doesn't require a lot of space.

BGC "official" schedule?
« Reply #3 on: January 31, 2005, 08:11:43 AM »
AJJ:  I was just reviewing the TSRA schedule which is darn near a copy of the Shooting Sports schedule but I don't see your BGC's SB MS schedule posted.  I'm sure it is somewhere but darn if I can find it.  IIRC it is the 3rd Sunday starting at what time?  Ending what time?  40 or 60?  And at sometime in the year the club starts up Wed evenings?

Just in case I am passing through on my way from Dallas to Memphis.

Thanks!

Memphis Shooting

Actually, Memphis has a nice range.  Memphis Sport Shooting Association is about 10 minutes from I-40 at Canada Road (Google it).  Lot's of people shoot Skeet/Trap/Sporting Clays and HP matches (600 yard range).  And, a 200 yard bench rest range is under construction next to the 100 yard range.  Smallbore is another story.  There is a monthly prone match, an occasional 3P match, but Silhouette died off a couple of years ago.  The silhouette banks are still available and a handfull of folks practice on paper, spinner targets and occasionally haul out the match targets; but it's not organized.  Call me after you have settled in and I will assist you finding a place to shoot.

Durant: Delighted to have the opportunity to publish our schedule.
SB is the third Sunday of each month (with no winter break), two matches (one for each gun, standard first) starting at 1:00pm, usually finish around 4:30.
Wednesday evening SB at 6:30pm, 4/20 through 8/31 (one match, standard one week, hunter the next.)
Highpower is the fourth Sunday at 1:00 pm February through October, two matches, Standard first.
New this year: SB using the 1/2 scale handgun targets, 9:00 am every 2nd Saturday. (Harder than it sounds. WILL teach you to find a spot on the target. Lots of 38's and 39's. 40's? Not this year for the Ft. Smith folks who got us interested in this variation.)
Exceptions to the above: Feb. SB is the 2nd Sunday, just that once. The September match will be our two day State Championship match and may or may not be on the weekend of the 3rd Sunday. We'll announce that one soon.
I'll miss the Feb. SB match because I'll in your neck of the woods. Hope to see you then. And I hope that anybody within driving distance of the Benton-Little Rock area will PM me for more info.
