CZ question
« on: January 27, 2005, 03:32:57 PM »
So I have finally decided upon a CZ 452 as my first silhouette rifle. Im wondering if there is any difference between the 452 silhouette and the 452 style I haven't been able to find a difference other than the finish on the barrel.

I don't think that there are really any other differences between the two rifles. However, I might try to sway you to look at the CZ American. It seems to be better suited as far as stock design for a silhouette gun. The Silhouette and the Style feel small in the average shooters hands. I have played with three of the Silhouettes and three of the Americans, I think that Americans felt like a better gun, they were also more accurate.  The biggest difference is the amount of cheek weld you can get with the American compared to the other two rifles.

I would reccomend that you try going to a place that has both and holding them and see what you think.

I havent bought anything yet. I was asking before I order one. I dont really have the option of holding either before ordering since Nanaimo is a small city and everything decent has to be ordered in.

Im not a big guy, as in 5'10, 140lbs so a smaller feeling rifle might work better for me. It would be nice to hold both before ordering, but I dont know anyone that owns one around here.

How about the 452 Varmint? It makes hunter class with most scopes.

I concur with Chunter on the size issue.  Granted I'm a little over average and for me the length of pull was short but that is easy to fix.  What is more difficult is 1) the thickness of the forend, a thicker forend would allow firmer support to the toros, 2) the protrusion of the magazine, I like a back of the hand hold and the magazine protrusion prevents that, 3) small grip, I end up only putting my thumb and finger tips on it, 4) the trigger, it's nonadjustable.

It's a good shooter.  I really like it but..when I was given an NS522 it fit better and I modified the trigger and my scores went up.  Still I'm moving to an Anschutz to get the better trigger.

Try the different models.  Good luck.

I looked at that, but doesnt a hunter class rifle have to have a tapered barrel?

So it seems to me then that the 452 american is a more well rounded rifle for  the majority of shooters.  Ill ask around locally to see if anyone has one that I can try. Thanks for everyones input.

kroegs, I had the American and would have to say it was a pretty nice rifle and had I known I wouldn't of sold it for dirt cheap. I bought the Sako (you may have shot it) so somethign had to go. Accuracy was good. The trigger needed work. and like the Sako a little weight needed to be put in the forestock to move the balance just a tad forward. (IMO)

I do still have the "Lux" model which you are welcome to borrow at the next Nanaimo shoot. The stock is more shaped for using the iron sites but if you have a big head like me, it works fine.

The CZ Varmint model is ok for smallbore hunter silhouette.  This issue was resolved quite a while back, I have an e-mail from Greg Conner, silhouette director, stating that is acceptable.

The Varmint model does have a tapered barrel and makes weight unless you use an overly heavy scope.  In my opinion it is the best bang for the buck because all you have to do is a little trigger work and you have a highly competitive rifle.

That would be very much appreciated. Next shoot is Feb 13th right?

Now everyone has gone and confused me as to what would be my best choice for a starter rifle. Too many models to choose from.

Paul's right, it's pretty easy to get most of your money back out of CZ, they're about the best bang for the buck out of whats available these days. For better your looking at double the cash. (at least)

But, take your time, you never know when something comes up. As a matter of fact I received a phone call today, totally out of the blue of someone who was cleaning out a closet and . . .

Nanaimo the 13th, Victoria on the 20th.

The American is easily modifable.  Go to http://rimfirecentral.com and check out the CZ forum.  I had one a few years ago.  Floated the barrel and improved accuracy by 75%.   There is a trigger mod available that is very inexpensive.  All these mods for under $50.  And like others have said, the gun has good resale value.

Guys who did their own mods claim MOA and better at 100 yards.  YMMV.

The Silhouette version is the synthitic (plastic) stock and blued action
http://www.cz-usa.com/01.detail.php?id=7

The Style is the one with the synthitic stock and satin barrel. They call this a matte nickel, and that about discribes it. Don't buy it as "Stainless", for that it is not. It more resembles a silhouette that has been spray painted a dull silver.
