Well I finally got to the range today with the Sportster and all I can say is...WOW! :-)

Here's the first 5 rounds through the thing at 25 metres. Hornady Varmint Express 17gr, 5mm ( .20") ctc. One ragged little hole!!! :shock:

1st 5 shots at 50 metres (shot numbers 11-15) for a 15mm (.59") ctc.

50 metre groups started opening out to around the 20mm (.79") mark with a hot barrell.

btw, that's 3 shots in one hole at the bottom of that group. I yipped the flyer.

This thing shoots way better than I do. :wink:

I'm hooked!

Congratulations Bang_off, what do you have for varmits to shoot with that .17 HMR "down under"? And be sure you enter the postal match with that real shooter!!!....<><.... :grin:

I'm "seriously" looking into getting one of these and topping it with a 6.5x20x50 WTC scope, looks like a pretty good shooter for about $200 or so total. I was wondering if the 17 hmr would stick around, if they all shoot like that, I'm sure it will. Do they have a sportster with the camo laminate stock?? Can you order one that way??

No you can't order it that way, have to buy it with synthetics and obtains Camo Laminates for it buy buying or swapping....<><.... :grin:

Redneckd1, they only come in one flavor, black synthetic....but you can do a trade or buy the camo lam stock from H&R.

Thx quick and MSP, seems like H&R/NEF would run a few out the door with the camo lam stocks, charge a few extra bucks and make some folks happy in the mean time!! Oh well, nothing like doing some trading and swapping to make things interesting!!

Bang_off, that's some good shooting. If it is a brand new gun it will get better as you put some more rounds thru it.

Australia has a problem with "feral pests". Basically this is every introduced species like rabbits, foxes, cats, pigs, goats, camels, buffalo etc.

Now the hummer is a bit underdone for a buff but will do just fine for the bunnies, foxes and cats. :grin:

As Rampaging Roy Slaven and H.G. Nelson are fond of saying:

"If it's feral it's in peril!" :-D

quickdtoo, I can see where your enthusiasm for the Handi configurtion comes from now. I've never even shot a single shot break barrell before, let alone own one. I think I need a Handi in 204, 44mag and 45-70 to fill the gaps in my present collection. :wink:

Nightrain52, this thing amazed me ouit of the box. All I did was polish the bore. I was having so much fun I forgot to do the shoot-clean-shoot thing too.

Bang Off, I did the shoot-clean-shoot thing on a couple of mine, and the rest I didn't....just polish the bore, then go to the range and shoot a bunch. I think that "proper" polishing smoothes the bore so it doesn't collect much jacket fouling and that's what the shoot-clean procedure does, so in essence, polishing does the same thing in advance that shooting does over time, and without all the cleaning, which can over time degrade the bore condition. As it has been said many times, more bores have been damaged from cleaning than shooting!

I think you need those new handis, too! Although the .223 might be more practical for you down under concerning ammo availability, it's a lot more common here and I wouldn't imagine there, too.

From the looks of the beaver tail forend, it's an older model stock and who knows what gets exported these days.....H&R won't ship the barrels out of the US, so it's kind of a moot point whether the frame can be shipped to H&R from AU, they won't even ship to Canada! :cry:

They are only sold here with the plastic stocks (same as everywhere). Plastic was quickly consigned to storage and replaced with second hand timber. :wink:

The barrel exchange programme is not available to us either. :cry:

Bang_off good looking gun, especially with the classic schnabel style forearm!!! I sometimes wish H&R did not stop making them but as in everything else manufacturers go the cheapest way, and I guess it's cheaper to make the newer straight style forearm, well they look nice also, just not the "classic" rifle style....<><.... :grin:

Thanks MSP Ret, it looks sooooooo much better with the wood and the schnable forend really suits it. I'm going to re-finish the wood and get it much closer to matching. Custom wood is on the cards too.

Quickdtoo, in reply to your earlier post, I'll go with the .204 for the very reason you state. The .223 IS very common here. :grin:
