« on: January 29, 2005, 09:18:49 AM »
Checked with BiMart this am, my gun clerk says the BC is available, so we did the paperwork and I paid for it, she'll call the order in Monday...$343 w/tax.....should be here in a couple weeks.   Now to decide what to do with the extra 45-70 barrel....45-100 and make the BC into a 45-120....what to do..... :?

Quick:

Is the Buff Classic the same twist as the normal 45-70 handi with a 1 in 20?

Just curious...since the original Sharps used this twist...it should do all right with all the various bullet weights...and it would be realtively simple to redo from the 45-70 to the 45-90....this is what I'm thinking about doing with it...once Santa brings it to me this coming Christmas...also...I think I'll definatly change over to a LimbSaver pad instead of the curved metal one...might make it a-little easier on the shoulder for those heavy long range loads.....

Don't know the twist rate for sure, but I do know that 45-90 and 45-100 brass is a lot less expensive than the 45-120 brass...Cabelas sells Starline for $75-$78 a hundred compared to Buffalo Arms 45-120 @ $42 for 20.....

So! Quick....I must have misread your email...are you going to order some 45-90 or 45-100 brass? If we all get together and order a "big lot" and split it up we can get a little better deal on it....anyone interested??    I'm interested.... 8) I'm thinking 45-90 but  would prolly go 45-100 if enough are interested....How about Haywire...have you gotten your brass yet??? ......I would think the longer barrel would be more efficient in a complete powder burn for them big cases....

The only brass I've ordered so far is  20 pcs of 45-120 from Buffalo Arms, haven't decided on a second caliber for sure yet, but I'm considering both the 45-90 and 45-100 since brass isn't so expensive, I'm leaning towards the 45-100, bigger is better!!!

Cool...I'm thinkin 45-100 also....I'm going to be using 500 grain Plus bullets so the extra room for powder (shooting strictly black)would be a plus and I think my 32 inch barrel would make good use of it also. I'm thinkin haywire is going with 45-90...

Mine is in my hot hands now

The BC really looks nice, not like the typical handi which is not supposed to turn heads.  I like the longer forend as it is better proportioned to the 32" barrel.  Now I have to get some time to shoot it.   I bought a box of winchester 300 grs, and will proceed with winchester brass.  Remington ammo has a 2 crimps and I dont like the second ring of deformation along the brass for repeated loadings.

Its amazing, a $200 handi is a work horse, not a looker.  A $250 ultra can add some style with the laminated stock, and give up nothing as far as practicality goes.  But, Im really impressed with the uniqueness and the impression you get from a $300 BC.   People unfamiliar with it definitely give it a second look.  The only improvement I can think of would be an octagonal barrel.

Hmmm, I've done draw filing before on a barrel, but not to shape it, just to finish it, that would be a job....I'll have ta ask Fred how long it took him on his .257 bob. Great idea, Bill!!

just a slight difference in ID between a bob and a buffalo  :o may not be enough real estate.  Thats why you can pick the sucker up, its a real big lightening hole down the 32" barrel.

Just purchased a Buffalo Classic very fun gun.  Don't know much about the 45-120.  Does anyone chamber for it or cartridge it?

Welcome to the forum!  :D It's an obsolete cartridge, don't know what replicas are still chambered, Cabelas and a couple places sell ammo for $80+ for a box of 20, so it's pretty much a handloader's caliber. Dies and brass are available, brass is still spendy at $42 per 20. but I don't need many! Hodgdon shows both T7 and smokeless load data for it, I'm going for T7, should be a lot of fun. Already have a .45-70 handi, it's a hoot to shoot, the 45-120 should be even more fun!!

Thanks! I enjoy this web site so much.  I learned so much and hope to learn much more. What rifle do you plan to shoot the 45-120 out of? Possibly re-chambered Buffalo?  I do not know much about hand loading but with in a month I am going to buy the equipment, since I just purchased a 338 Rum & 375 Rum.  Ammo is a little expensive,  but beyond that the fear that they my discontinue of so I am getting ready now. What price range (if you are rechamber)  would it be to do such a thing? I assume T7 is the type of powder to use?  Thanks for all the help :D

Here's a 3 page thread on the rechamber...Smithy will charge about $80 out the door to ream the BC to 45-120...T7(Triple Seven) is Hodgdon's latest black powder substitute.

Tim, have you slugged the bore, so you know what size bullets you'll need to feed your new prize?

How deep is the rifling?  My Target was .379/.376 groove/lands, so there was only .0015" depth.  I'm curious.

It don't matter much, I have 5 different cast bullets to shoot, they are all .458" to .460", some with gas checks and have been used by someone here at one time or another and has had good luck with em, don't think I'll have the problem the 38-55 Target has. We've never met a .45-70 barrel that didn't shoot good  , really don't think I'll have a problem. I'm lookin at sights right now, trying to decide on the Marbles 9813 or the Smith ladder sight.... :? Of course I can always use some suggestions!!

Now I'm gettin nervous, I thought I found a backup source for the Bell 45-3ΒΌ" brass, Track of the Wolf sells it, so I ordered 20 rounds, and some other goodies, compression plug, expander dies ands such....they shipped the order today...but backordered the brass!

Ya hadda go and post a picture of that sight dintcha!  Now I want one for my target!
But where to try it out?  Montanan thinks the 38-55 won't reach the 800 yd targets, so I oughta not lust after any long-range sights.

Yeah, that's it!! It can't shoot that far so I don't NEED no long-range sight!!!

Right.

I'm leanin more towards the Marbles 9813 tang sight, now.... Thinkin about inletting and bedding the sight base, glass bedding the butt to the frame and steel bedding the barrel to the frame as Fred did with his 257 bob..

Thanks 95RoadKing.....

Quick...why in the world would you want tha Marbles over that awsome sliding buck horn site? Yea I know it's cheaper...but really...since your going for it...might as well get a real nice one...and $140...is a-lot cheaper than what the want for a Soule? site...or the Pedersall? site...(sorry if I missed spelled those two)

Deadeye tells me the Marbles doesn't fold forward, just back....not cool. The main reason I don't care for the Smith ladder sight is it has no windage adjustment, so that means I need to buy a new windage adjustable front sight or I have to beat the globe sight up with a brass drift, which is likely what I'll end up doing.... The other thing that is a problem is I won't be able to use the short range buckhorn cuz it's gonna be too close to my old shootin eye....

But isn't the Marbles a tang site...and the buckhorn meant for up on the receiver? Are you going to mountthe Marbles on the receiver as well?

Yes, the Marbles is a wrist mounted sight, and no, I don't think it's gonna get mounted at all....the Smith ladder sight seems to be my best option even though it's not perfect, it would be mounted in the same location as the Williams WGRS sight that comes with the BC. The only other option at this time is the Williams FP sight which is kinda incongruous with the black powder roots of the 45-120 cartridge.....but I'm still open to suggestions!!

I really like that sliding buckhorn site...it just looks cool...and looks to be a high quality site...and having a adjustable front globe site wouldn't be to much of a distraction...they do make some really goods ones to use as well... If I ever get another  Marlin Cowboy it will get one of these...or the actual replacement dovetailed site for it...
