Hmmm, that's an interesting thought! Your younger eyes will probably be able to use the buckhorn sight, at least! For me, though, it would just be a blur....

Lee Shaver says he's going to do the false tang thing for his Soule to attach to so it should be attached to the receiver via that.  Says it costs about $65 extra for the tang vs. just screwing it to the wrist.  We'll see, I just got put on night shift so I'm all outta wack. I haven't gotten the receiver in the mail to him yet.  Oh, and yes, mine is going to be a 45-90.

Lee did the same thing for me when I had my BC.  You won't regret it.  he did a first class job.  I also had him modify the sight so it would fold backwards, whick makes for a much easier rifle to case and carry.

Otherwise the Soule sight folded forwards over the hammer.

For smokeless the short range sight would be way more than enough.  BP users will need the long range model.

You can see pics of my BC by going to my site at the www at the bottom of my post.

I'm still waiting for an e-mail back from Shaver...must be busy workin on Haywires rig....I still don't know whether to try this myself or pay a smith to do it.....the little voice in the back of my head is telling me to spend the money and get it done right, not fight it  and go shoot it when it get back from him....

Thanks handi...that really looks nice and neat but Quickdtoo is the one that is trying to figure out what kind of sight to put on his new rifle...I guess my last post was a little misleading......I am trying to figure out whether to rent a chamber reamer to go from a 45-70 to a 45-100 or send it off to Mr.Shaver and let him do the work...I've never used a reamer before but can't see that it would be too difficult...not cutting that much out....what I don't know is if the reamer will automatically adjust my throat......no one will tell me at the rental places....they are attorney proofing themselves I belive....or scratching the Smiths backs...  They say they usually rent to Smiths and they already know what to rent and they just sent it to them......

What scared me off from doing my own ream was that if I damage a reamer cuz I don't know what I'm doing, they'll charge whatever it costs to replace/repair the reamer. A solid pilot reamer from Midway runs about $90-$100 and much more for a floating pilot reamer, I suspect. I'm getting the smith to do it for $80 and he's doing it on a lathe, so I expect better than hand ream quality. Plus I didn't want to screw up the barrel....

now if I can just get hold of some brass.....I emailed Liberty Shooting Supplies to see if they had any 45-120 brass.....Nadda, zip, zero, none!

My only problem is I don't know of a Smith that is close to me down here....I'm sure there are some but they are probably in Houston...I try and stay away from there.....Thats why I wrote Shaver a e-mail asking for a quote...still haven't heard anything back either but guess he's busy....

Man...thats really going to reak if ya get your rifle back and all the other stuff but NO BRASS!!!  It will be like having a new Hummer in the driveway but no wheels on it!!! Hope it all comes together for ya....
I'm going to deffinately be behind on my project...corse nothing new....I dropped off my upper off my AR at a Smith up in Dallas 2 days after Christmas to have a Phantom flash hider installed on it and I just got it back today!!! Nope...no more work going to him.....6 weeks to thread a barrel...give me a break!!! :x

I found out why no one has Bell 45-120 brass, I'm calling them tomorrow to see if they have any left.....

Quote
MAST Sells Bell Brass

MAST Technology has sold the production line associated with Bell Brass cartridge. The line produced custom and obsolete brass cases for Lazzeroni, Dakota, Federal and Kynoch, and products under the Bell headstamp. MAST will sell off the balance of the remaining inventory of items, like .45-120, .404 Jeffrey, .45-90, .470 N.E. and .45-110.

As part of the sale, MAST closed its Boulder City, Nev., facility and consolidated operations within its Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Mo. MAST will continue to manufacture items for the Department of Defense and supply ammunition-manufacturing machinery to the industry.

Not only that, I got 20 on backorder at Buffalo Arms, 20 on backorder at Track of the Wolf, and I'm gonna try to order 20 from MAST!!!  I may just end up with 60 rounds, if I'm unlucky!!  I got an email this evening from Track of the Wolf saying it's overdue to them and they would check it out....

Quick! That sight that you had the picture of that screws to the barrel of the BC, How far out do you think that sight will get you? What are you going to use for a front sight if you go with that one? I may not have time to send the rifle out for the tang sight by the time I get it picked up. Did you find any more brass.? Good luck. Thanks
shot placement is everything.

James, I don't know what range that sight is good for, but it appears to be much higher than the Williams FP sight is capable of and the FP sight  is good for 500-600yds as one poster reported recently. Montanan would be the one to ask about the 800yd capability of this sight.

The good news for me   is that I just got off the phone with Jay at MAST Technology, they have 15000 rounds of the 45-120 brass in stock, although it's not been polished cuz they no longer have the polishing equipment, the bad news is they have a minimum order of 100 rounds...but the price has been reduced from $228 per 100 to $182 per 100....so now I at least have a supply of brass on the way that will last my lifetime. He said once the supply they have on hand is gone, there won't be anymore that he knows of.

True?? or he's a good salesman hoping you'll jump on squirreling away a real pile for the big impending future dry-up...   Well anyway ...your going to really end up with a pile of brass!!  I think that the reason for the alleged extinction is the fact that it wasn't a real period round....I mean during the Buffalo harvesting era....prolly not a lot of period rifles chambered for it.... I'm glad ya finally found a source for um though....that was gettin kinda spooky...maybe I should stock up some more of the 2.6 brass while it's available form Midway.....

No polisher, but I do have a dishwasher!!! I'll try em and see what happens....if that doesn't work, expect a package in the mail, thanks for the offer, I appreciate it!!!  For what little I'll probably be shooting them, hand polishing wouldn't be out of the question....Unless I really get hooked and want to shoot some long range stuff for competition....we got a long range group that shoots locally, just never got into it....ya never know....This project is turnin the way a couple of my other "toy" projects have gone....the last one was supercharging a Jeep Cherokee, what started out as a $4000 project ended up costing over $10,000!!! ....That windage adjustable sight is lookin mighty good right now, too bad I just spent the money for it on brass!!!

Thanks Deadeye!  :-D I need the moral support.....If'n I don't need the adjustable front sight, I'll be real happy, I'm gonna try sighting in with the factory front sight first, I ordered a special brass drift from Track of the Wolf for $4 that is made for drifting dovetailed barrel sights, hopefully it will work well for a fixed front sight that I don't need to make adjustments for windage due to wind conditions. I may ultimately buy one of the adjustable front sights with the bubble level, anyway, but for now, this will have ta do....

Called the gunsmith to see if he ordered the rental reamer last Monday like he said he would....he hadn't, as I suspected.... he's a fair bit older than I am and I suspected he might get busy and just maybe forget.....no wonder some smiths take so long to get a gun done....I expect he'll get it done right away once he receives the reamer since he's only got a limited time to get the job done before he has to return the reamer....I'll give him a call again next week to see if he's any further along....
