Recoil from.44 mag T/C Contender vs. Other .44 mags

I shot a .44 mag in Contender the other day and it may just be me, but have any of you noticed the crazy recoil compared to other .44 mags? For example i shot a .44 mag in Ruger SRH and it seemed like a baby compared to it?\. Again it just may be. If not what was your experience with it?

I really do not notice a difference. I have both a Redhawk and a T/C contender.  :D

Hey, Mossy---I agree with you---I had an extremely accurate 12"Hunter barrel and got rid of it because it twisted and bucked like a pissed off mule with full house 300 gr loads---I shoot the same load in my two 629's and my SBH Bisley Hunter and they are nothing compared to that contender---it's the character of the recoil that is the issue---the hottest 300 gr load in my FA .454 is more comfortable to shoot IMHO!!!!   :eek: pg

I'm right with Palgeno on this one. I had a Contender with a 10" barrel that was the hardest kicking handgun I have ever shot, just wicked. And this was with Winchester White Box. It was harder to control than my FA .454 shooting firewall loads (300 grain BRP cast over 32 grains of H110).
There has to be a reason, I just didn't feel like taking the time to figure it out. :?

yup, my 14" Contender kicks way harder than my Redhawk. No cylinder gap to reduce the recoil.

Ed hit the nail on the head.  The lack of a cylinder gap makes a big difference.  I have a SBH 10.5" and a contender 44 mag in 10" and 14 inch.  The velocity is a good 100 to 150 fps with the same load in the contender.  The recoil in the 10" is the highest.

I`ve got 3 Contender frames and love the little gun, but your right about the heaver recoiling barrels, they are just not fun to shoot. I reather shoot 25 - 440 gn. bullets from my .500 S&W from the bench than 1 heavy loaded round from a .44 on a Contender frame off handed.

My only .44 is an octagon .44 Hotshot barrel for my Contender and I'm here to tell you the recoil on that rascal is nasty!

I shoot a 10" bull barrel in 44, usually with no scope on the gun.  I just do not see where the recoil is that much different than any other 44 I have shot with the exception of my Winchester 94 (that one hits you in the shoulder but does not hurt your hand)

My first centerfire handgun was the 44 magnum 10" contender. Ouch! I had the wooden grip and foreend which are light in weight. The recoil tore the web of my hand. Putting a Pachmayr grip and foreend on it really made a big difference.

I agree, the recoil in a 10 inch barrel is wicked unless you do a couple things.  I changed grips and fore arm.  Put extension rings on my scope and moved it as far forward as possible.  This tamed it a a great deal.  That said, I have a SW .44 Mountain gun that will really get your attention if you are not ready when you touch it off.
