17 HMR: Difference between XTP and V-Max.

How much better does the 20gr. XTP hold up to target impact compared to the 17gr. V-Max?  Just curious to know.

Yeah, ummm...thanks?  Now, how about when talking about targets like golf balls, squirrels, et cetera.  I'm pretty much wondering what everyone's experiences are while trying these two individual bullets, and how they turned out.  In addition, was there any noticeable gain in accuracy because of extra weight?  Maybe because of a difference in shape?  TIA

Here's a couple pages on 20gr XTP penetration from RFC....

http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71886&highlight=20gr+XTP+penetration

Some guns shoot them well, others don't, they're just like any other 17hmr ammo as far as accuracy, pick the brand that shoots best. You've got 2 choices for the 20gr, Hornady XTP of CCI Gamepoint. I've got 4 17hmrs, both Marlins shoot the 20gr as accurate as they do the Federal Vmax, just to a lower POI. My CZ American doesn't seem to shoot them near as well as the Remington or Hornady Vmax.

Those that have chrono'd the 20gr are seeing velocities of 2400fps+.

My Savage shoots 20 grain bullets about as well as 17's.  A friend has a Ruger All-weather 77-17, which will outshoot my Savage with 17 grain bullets, and it  does not like 20's at all.  Like other rimfires, you have to try  all sorts of ammo and find what works.
