low cost mauser sporter project
« on: January 30, 2005, 05:06:52 AM »
hey
looking to build a low cost sporter mauser project    im looking at the yugo m48 action but im open to suggestions
i would really like to have a carbine length barrel   some have mentioned the swiss k-31 also but dont know about the parts availibility
i just want something to shoot at the range for fun and a conversation peice  (seems every time i show up with my 2 tikkas everyone wants to know how come they are more accurate than their rifle)
anyway any suggestions would be great  i would like to end up with around $400 in the whole project   so any info would help a bunch  also
where might a guy pick up an m48 or k98 or even a k-31 swiss for a good price??
thanks guys

JG Sales has the Turk 1938 Mausers for $65. These take small ring threaded barrels and standard Mauser 98 stocks.

Sarco has Yugo M48's for $70.  These take regular large ring 98 barrels, but will need different stocks.  Some other things aren't compatible. as well (striker, bolt, triggerguard, floorplate).

How much are you looking to spend?  If rebarreling, Midway has the Adams and Bennet barrels for very reasonable costs (if you've got a C&R you can get a dealer discount and get the 21" barrels for $88).

As to stocks, I got the stock for my project from Boyd's.  I got a Factory 2nd's JRS Classic in Nutmeg laminate for $40.

With dealer discount a Dayton Traister low-scope safety can be had from Brownells for $13, and the scope bases will set you back $6-10 from Midway.  You then need the bolt forged.  I've seen plenty of places that will do this online for around $30.

My sporter project I'm working on is as follows:

Turk Mauser 1938 from Century Arms  - $40 (got them when they were on sale)
Bent bolt off of Ebay - $25
DT Low Scope Safety from Brownells - $13
Weaver Grand Slam bases from Midway - $10
A&B .257 Roberts 21" barrel from Midway - $88
Bold Mauser 98 Trigger from Midway - $27
JRS Classic stock from Boyd's - $40
4oz DuraCoat Matte Black from Midway - $17

Gunsmith charges - $45 to install barrel and $32 to drill/tap for scope mounts.

Total cost is: $337.

That's right around what a new rifle would cost, but not with a laminate stock.  Being a Mauser action I'll also have a rifle that's all steel construction and controlled-feed. :)

I'm not sure can call my 98k project gun a sporter, but i like the orginal military look.

1. German 98k complete gun with shotout barrel for $20
2. Used Czech 8mm barrel in excellent condition from Numrich Gun Parts $37.00
3. See thru high scopemounts(clears orginal safety lever) from Samco Global Arms  $15
4. Simmons $150 scope on sale for $59
5. New safety lever "orginal"  $5
6. Used Czech handguard $15
7.  Refinish orginal stock(10 coats of tung oil),  Bend orginal bolt, Change out barrel, mount scope, change out safety lever and check the headspace the total cost "0" I did it.

I estimated around $200 at first but i came way under at $151.99.  The barrel passed the "go" headspace guage after assembly without touching anything.                                                      BigBill

Sorry i mixed up my two mauser projects with the scopes.

My second project is a 7mm mauser.

1.M1895 Chilean 7mm 29" barreled action from Samco  $89 w/turned down bolt(the action is actually an 1893 boer)
2.orginal stock from numrich  $52 w/hardware refinished with 10 coats of tung oil. ( the two m1895 slots filled because of the 1893 reciever)
3. Ultralux 6x42 3 post scope from CDNN  $29.
4.See thru mounts from samco  $15.

This one was $185.  I kind of like the orginal look with the military style 3 post scope.
