Cast 405's or bigger, I've had good luck with IMR3031 and 4064, I've only used XMP 5744 for 500+ in an '86.  It's hard to beat a good duplexed Black Powder load (4227 and FFF).
I had to give the nod to 4064 in the accuracy department for my lever gun, and Black powder for the single shot.

Marlin 1895 45-70
405 grain Remington JSP seated to 2.55" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primers
48 grains H322 START
55 grains H322 compressed MAXIMUM
MAXIMUM yields 1950 fps from my 22" barrel, should get about 2030 fps in a Marlin 1895CB
Work up carefully from START toward MAXIMUM watching for signs of excessive pressure or velocity
