Does anybody own one of the new Beretta Stampedes?
« on: January 30, 2005, 04:24:18 PM »
I saw one briefly at my gun club today and it looks like a nice gun.  Just wondering if anybody here has had the chance to shoot or handle one and what the opinions are.

ive heard some mix reviews of them I believe some substandard ones sneeked through. The one i shot was a real nice gun very accurate and seemed well made.

Evidently there is not stampede to buy the Stampede!

Bought one for my son this past May with a 7.5" barrel ... he prefers it over the Vaqueros. The fit and finish is very good. The loads I reload for him with 8.4 gr of Unique using a 200 gr rn-fp shoot very accurately for him. He is well pleased and I noticed this same revolver now sells for $40 more than what I paid for his.

4 3/4" .45 Colt, aftermarket aged Ivory Micarta grips, standard blue & color case finish.

The pistol has a crisp trigger, very nice fit and finish (especially considering it cost quite a bit less than a Ruger Vaquero when I bought it) and shoots nice tight groups when I do my part.

Good Points
-Locks up tight as a drum, no bolt stop drag marks on the cylinder.
-Shoots better than I do.
-Nice colors on the frame, nice blue job, only machine marks are inside and they're not too bad.
-Already has a music wire spring for the trigger and bolt, and a coil spring and plunger to tension the hand.  No little leaf springs to break.
-Great trigger pull for an out of the box revolver, and I'm a trigger nut.

Less than Good Points
-Factory plastic grips are GARBAGE.  Cheap, shiny, black plastic, ill-fitting junk-ola.  Throw 'em out or get the deluxe version with wood.
-This gun will, on rare occassion, lock up at half cock.  Ya gotta hold it just right and cock it while empty, or take out the cylinder, but you sometimes get it to "stick" at half cock until you fidget it loose.  Never had it happen with cartridges in the chambers, but this does cause me to wonder about carrying it while hunting or for self defense.  I took the backstrap to a local gunsmith for rebluing when the nice ham-fisted man who made my grips buggered it up while doing the fitting... and tried to sneak it back with a bad cold-blue job.  The gunsmith rolled his eyes and said he'd had a Stampede at the shop lock up on him while being indexed.

All in all, much better fit and finish than anything in the price range.  Much better trigger out of the box than any Ruger single action I've tried, and when I bought mine it was cheaper than a Ruger.  Having said that, I'd compare it real close to a New Model Vaquero before I made up my mind on what I bought, if I had it to do all over again!

Hope this helps.

99% of my handguns are S&W's, for CAS I shoot Schofields but wanted to see what all the Colt hubbub was about. I know it is a clone but I bought a new 7 1/2 cch  for under $400. It is in 44/40 and shoots very nice. I only shot about 24 of my medium reloads but liked the way it pointed and it hit what I was looking at. The case hardnening was not great but for the price was fine. Fit & finish was just great. Almost makes me want another for a shooting pair.
