Win 94,, Totally Torched!!

I was reading a cowboy action article and the this guy had this to say about the 94. I was wanting to get one in 44mag. Sheesh

"The 1894 Winchester generally should be avoided. The action was designed for longer cartridges than pistol caliber, and I've yet to see a reliable example. (E-mails aren't necessary if you have one. There's probably a reliable Jaguar out there somewhere, too.) If you have one and are financially stretched, obviously you'll need to use it and learn how to defeat its idiosyncrasies and live within its limitations. I'm told that it is so complex inside that only gunsmiths should detail strip it. The '94 Marlin and '73 Winchester are not that complicated. The Marlin is the simplest of the two."

"Im Told"

Obviously the man has no first hand experience AT ALL!
Even without stripping it, just looking down from the top, you can see it's not complicated. Hell, I can do it.
I have heard people bashing the '94 for my entire shooting life. My experience with the rifle has been all good, so I figure they are just out to make a name for themselves.

Yesterday for the second week-end in a row I went shooting and took my Winchester 94 Trapper 44 Mag and my Marlin 1894FG 41 Mag.  Put 50 rounds through the Winchester without a problem as usual.  For the second week-end in a row the Marlin jammed with the lever extended and I had to take the lever off the gun and remove the rounds from the magazine.  I guess I have my own opinion on this matter.

The Marlin is now for sale.  I have no use for a jamming gun and am not going to fool around with getting it worked on.

before you guys run off and do something foolish,  get a screwdriver and check every screw on the outside of the gun to see if it is tight.  several guys posted here about the same problems, me included, and all of us found loose screws.  tightened them up, fixed the problem.

I've got an 1894 in 357 and it will eat anything I feed it, including 38's and as fast as I can cycle the lever.

sounds like the kind of tripe you read in the big name magazines. if it isn't the newest, latest ultra lightweight bolt action in the newest hottest magnum, it's garbage. the '94 and the .30-30 have been together for 110 years, and they'll still get 'er done, and they look cooler too.

My winnie too...

as a matter of fact, the harder I cycle it, the less problems I got.
(at the beginning, i didn't handle the arms very firmly... learned very quick doing it "the hard way")

I gave one of my daughters my Model 94 Trapper because I did not like the crossbolt safety.  I never had any problem with it feeding ammunition, though, either Magnum or Special.  I did have a feeding problem with a Chief Crazy Horse that I bought used, which had been fired by the original owner.  I think it had been assembled with the assumption that no one was going to try to shoot it.  I sent it back to the factory and it works just fine.   The writer was talking about rifles that had been originally designed for rifle cartridges that had been chambered for pistol cartridges.  He may actually have a small point.  Remember the Remington 788 in .44 Magnum?  Winchester built the Model 92 as a miniature Model 86, to handle pistol cartridges.  On the other hand, Model 94's have been tuned to handle pistol cartridges quite nicely, so I wouldn't get too exercised over this issue.

Seems like that guy hasnt ever fired a Winchester in his life. Never heard of a Winchester being unreliable at all hardly, a few probs here and there, but not like what he was saying. Well, I'll stick with my 94 30-30, and thats the bottom line as far as I'm concerned :)
