Anyone have the .45-70 and not re-load?
« on: January 31, 2005, 08:46:02 AM »
Hello all... :D

My question is if anyone here has a NEF .45-70 handi-rifle and not re-load and buy all of there rounds from the local store? I ask because I have heard so much about the capabilties of this round and I want to try it out for myself. Everytime I read about the .45-70 I hear about re-loading which is something I would like to do someday, but right now I am lucky if I have enough time just to go to the local shooting range.

I thought I would start with the .45-70 handi-rifle and if I like the round I'll go ahead and get the Marlin guide gun I have always admired.

So, does anyone shoot the .45-70 and get results good enough, and not re-load?
I love shotguns! :cb2:

Welcome aboard! :D  I didn't reload to begin with and have shot most all factory ammo with great results....You can get factory stuff from mild to wild for ~$20 a box or less. The Remington 300gr HP and 405gr FN shoot 2" or less at 100yds, same for the Winchester 300gr which are a little faster at 1880fps. For a close to full house load, the 350gr PMC RN at over 2000fps are very accurate in mine, zeroed 3" high at 100yds, they are 5" low at 200yds w/a 2-3" 3 shot group at 200yds.

Hi,

The first time I shot mine (and the first time I shot a 45/70), I got 1 in at 50 yards with the factory loads I tried.  I shot the 405 gn mild loads and the 300 gn winchesters which were supposed to be at 1830 fps.  Both did about 1 in.  I am not an accomplished marksman, so I know if you are, you should be able to do better.  I do not re-load for the 45/70 but that is next on my list of dies.

:D, Welcome aboard RedRyder21. Both quickdtoo and fortress49 are right on the money and echo my sentiments and expierence's exactly!!! Try the factory ammo they suggested and you will surprise yourself at the accuracy obtainable from this old cartridge and factory ammo!!....<><....

i like the others before me shot the 45-70 without reloading
and i liked the remington 405 jsp factory round better than the 300 for out to 150 yard shooting
wally world sold the 405's for abt 15 bucks a box of 20
shoot em and save the brass cause once you get hooked on this round you will be reloading to see what kind of real accuracy this round can produce.
good luck with this gun and caliber

Some of the most accurate loads I've ever put together I did with a Lee Loader. I loaded up some rounds for my .30-30 Contender that at 50 yards could be covered with a dime. You can pick up a Lee loader for right at $20 I think.
Take a look over at www.castbullet.com and see Junior's article there on the Lee Loader.

The standard 45-70 loads are really accurate and very mild to shoot.  They are great for whitetail at close ranges.  But for more dangerous game, say Bears or Hogs you might want to go with the Buffalo Bore loads.  They are the maximum for the NEF/H&R 45-70.

Well I must say that I've been into reloading for some time, so when I got into the 45-70 cartridge I just picked up the dies and read all the information I could on the subject as I was loading for BPCR anyway with the Buffalo Classic.

So already having the RCBS Single Stage Press, the price of 45-70 brass was easy as well as the shell holder since I had purchased the multi pack long ago.

When you add up the price of factory ammo, well the money saved is great.

In order to get the MAXIMUM power out of the 45-70, (and why WOULDNT you ?), you must reload this cartridge !
The highest power commercially loaded 45-70's are the Buffalo Bore & Garrett's  and these are only "Marlin"/Level 2 Loads.

I have personally been shooting RUGER/Level 3 45-70 handloads (2500fps/300gr, 2300fps/350gr, 2100fps/400gr) out of my Handi-rifle for the past year with no problems and NO high pressure signs.
No commercial source produces 45-70 loads this powerful.

All cartridges should be loaded to the MAXX !
If you don't need that power level, the correct thing to do is choose a smaller cartridge.

I won't even hunt small game with the Level 1 (weak trapdoor) loads; in my book they are good for huntin' paper targets, nuthin' else.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

When I first got my NEF 45-70, I bought a box every every different brand and type of factory ammo I could find at the time (18 boxes).

The most accurate by far was
Black Hills 405 Round Nose Flat Point and
Winchester 300 Supreme Partition Gold

But I reload for it now.

Get a 45/70
« Reply #11 on: February 03, 2005, 05:06:21 AM »
The original poster stated that he probably would get the NEF 45/70 and then get a Marlin if he liked the round if I read his post correctly.
Man,is he in for a surprise!First off he is going to fall in love with the 45/70.It's the next best thing to sex.Second he is going to realize that going to the Marlin after shooting the NEF is like test driving a Cadillac and settling for a Chevrolet.
For caliber, quality, accuracy(particularly accuracy),value and effectiveness the NEF in 45/70 absolutely cannot be beat.
The is an indefinable feeling about hunting with this rifle.Hard to describe. It just FEELS GOOD!
And no I do not reload for the 45/70.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

My first NEF is a .45/70 and I get great savings from reloading with a simple and cheap Lee Classic Loader. I enjoy making the cartridges as much as I do shooting them.

I load:
Win Brass
Rem 300 gr JHP
50.0 grains IMR3031
Win LR Primer

This load costs me 50 cents a round verses the one dollar store price.

I strongly suggest you reconsider.

Enjoy!

Want to give away some of that old 45-70 brass?  ;)  I'll gladly pay the shipping.

My Marlin 1895 is probably the nicest rifle I own.  The wood is beautiful, it shot very well right out of the box and is a definite conversation starter at the range.  I think you might have your Chevys and Cadillacs confused.  I like my Handi-Rifle and all, but if it's a Cadillac then my Marlin's a Rolls Royce.

I'll agree that my Marlin 1895GS is a Rolls Royce as comapred to a standard Handi rifle in all respects...the Buff Classic is another story...the Buff Classic is  sort of like a Bently if you know what I mean

Try some of the Winchester Supreme 300 grain Nosler loads...they are very very  accurate and will take anything here in the lower 48 you could want to shoot...and when your ready to start reloading...you can step them up several notches to around 2300 fps and still stay in the Level 2 loads...this is what I shoot out of my stainless guide gun...they aren't to bad to shoot...and they are very accurate...give ole Like2hunt or ditchdigger a holler and ask them about my rifle and load...they got to shoot them this past weekend when I was down in Oklahoma hog hunting with them...every Marlin 45-70 I've owned.. have shot them very close to the same accuracy...which is right at or under  1" at 100 yards...

Jrff223 in MHO you should grt a 45-70 or a BC, then start reloading for it.
Then you would be a true Handi-holic. every body needs a 45-79.
Good Luck Marv.
