45/70 SHORT.....?

I enjoy paper patching .458 caliber rounds. I find the 45/70 to be too large a powder capacity to use in 12 or 14" barrels. Has anyone wanted a .458" bore rimmed round? I have a 45/70 case I cut to 1.5"length and  think it would work great in the Contender Pistol. I have had a 45 Win Mag but it is of course a .451 or .452" bore. With all the 45/70 fans I've wondered why a short case wildcat has not been made. Lots of .452" cases,,no .458" cases that I remember.

What would you gain with a .006" increase in diameter over a 45 colt or win mag? Seems like a lot of work for no reason. Thats just my $.02 though.   KN

You are talking about an already existing wildcat.  You will find it in some editions of Cartridges of the World.  It was originally developed as a silhouette revolver cartridge where heavy bullets are the order of the day.  The 0.458 bullet diameter was chosen to allow use of the wide range of 0.458 rifle bullets available.

Easy Paper Patch bullet...

a quick and very easy and capable lead bullet for paper patching in any .458" rifle is the SPEER SWC .451 Swaged Lead Pistol bullet>weighs 250 grains. I have one I saved after it went all the way thru an 8 pt. buck and was found under hide in front leg after penetrating the body. Nothing like a bubble gum soft lead bullet that will expand from here to there without cracking or breaking into pieces.

Why would you want a .458 bore, to paper patch a bullet that is .451?  Can't you just use gas checked .452s and get all the velocity you can handle related to recoil?  I understand wanting to use softer lead, but you really don't need it for deer and bear.  Just a thought.

However, another wild cat that intrigues me is the .375 short.  It's almost exactly between the .357 and the .41 Mag, just like the .44 mag is just in between the .41 and the .45!  You could chamber it in a black hawk and get the velocities of a .357 mag with bullets as heavy as 200 grains!  Just cut down .375 Winchester brass to .357 length and find someone who would chamber and barrel a good Blackhawk or Super.  If you used a super, you could probably push the brass a tad longer than the .357!

Well Bill Alexander came up with a 45-70 cartridge, shortened to fit in an AR-15 mag but with a .50 call bullet.  It's called the .50 Beowulf.

I beleive the .475 Linebaugh and the .480 Ruger were both based off a shortened 45/70, using a .475 diameter bullet.

I did buy a used Super 14 in .357 Herret today. It, opened up, would be a .375 Herret???
Too much thinking going on here!

I had a Super 14 in .35 Rem about 20 years ago I guess. Great accuracy,,all the 2X Leupold EER pistol could extract from it.


Don't ask.-- - - - - I bought the .357 Herret,,,,just,,,because.

I am about to purchase a standard 45/70 12" Contender Custom Shop bull barrel. Buddy says to just 'download' it. If that barrel warrants it,,might build a 1.5" 45/70 "short".
any way to get that article short of subscribing?

The 45-60 Winchester as was chambered in the 1876 Winchester was a shorter version. Don't recall the exact length. Check your copy of "Cartridges Of The World". Brass from 45-70 is used for this round, just trimmed for length.

 The 475 Linebaugh Maximum may work for what you want, perhaps without the neck reaming or expanding to .475 diameter.
