Help me identify bullet mold!
« on: January 31, 2005, 04:44:52 PM »
I just bought sight unseen a used round ball mold for about twice the price of a new Lee. It was represented as a Lyman, but it's black anodized aluminum - not iron, almost (but not quite) fits on any of my Lyman handles, is marked 513 on the upper front surface of both blocks and 50 CAL in slanted letters below the 513 on one block.

I bought it to use for a plinker load for my 50-110 and since the few round ball 50 molds currently available only seem to cast either .500 or up in the .520s .... I knew Lyman used to catalog a .512 and .515 and knowing I'd someday be looking for a .510-.512, figured I'd better grab this one.

I'd like to find handles to fit, a mfgr's name, any other info - right now I'm feeling a little burned on this "Lyman" mold, but still hoping I can make it work rather than going after the seller.

Thanks, Joe / hobbyguymaine / old windbag

Welcome to the board you ole wind bag you. We are glad to have you here. Hope all is well in Maine. Love that place. Wish I could help you with the mould but to my very limited knowledge Lyman never made alum. moulds.

You might try changing the handles a little to make them fit and cast with the thing. See what you have and it just might work. I'd surely be interested in the out come and I hope someone has an answer for you.

Again welcome and don't be a stranger.

I almost bought a thompson Center round ball mould at the gun show last week.  they were all 3 digit numbers and started with 5xx.  they were black but ai could not tell what it was made of it was shrink wraped to a paper card.  They make their own handles.  their mould is narrower than the small lyman.  Hope this helps. On that Mold, I can't help with the IDentification, but I just wanted to encourage you to try making a set of handles for it.

I made some for my four cavity Lyman awhile back and it turned out better than I expected.
I have only two sets of factory Handles in the four cavity and about twenty four cavity molds.
I made three more sets since I like to cast alternating three molds at a time and sometimes four when I am really hot.

So the handle thing is just cutting flat steel, welding eyes on the end and heating to offset the eye hinge, Drilling for the mold pin holes and adding a hinge pin and fitting some hollow wooden handles. Some filing for fit and you're done.
I even got some Birchwood Casey Cold blue and blued and polished a couple sets.
