Enough of this recoil foolishness!!!
« on: February 01, 2005, 11:36:27 AM »
Now that we've got the handguns with crippling recoil, we need to concentrate our demand on other features that make our guns more difficult and less pleasant to shoot. I vote for earsplitting muzzle blast!

Surely some manufacturer can come up with an absolutely vicious curl-your-hair and blow-your-eardrums noise.  I'm talking about a caliber that redirects the blast back in your face so that after your first shot you look like a cartoon character that just had a stick of dynamite blow up in his hand.  I'm talking singed eyebrows and smouldering hair.  I'm talking powder tatoos over 98 percent of your body.

Whaddya think?

I think smith just did with the 460 ported and with full loads i dont want to be near it when it goes off. The .454 is bad enough.

There is nothing that seems to have a ferocious recoil as the 454 Casull using full house loads, now the 460 S&W, boy, you better wear a hard hat shooting that baby;)LOL, just kidding, maybe the that big frame can cool down the recoil some, believe it or not the 45/70 has less recoil;) same as the 450 Marlin in Magnums research's wheelgun, there is less recoil using the 450 Marlin and a 350gr bullet Vs the 454 Casull using a 300gr bullet, seems weird huh. But that Magnums research 450 Marlin has a ten inch barrel, the next model will have wheels to get it around LOL. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

any of the higher pressure rifle rounds in about a 10" Encore with a brake.  'Course for full effect, you could go without ear protection  and shoot into a stiff wind from under an enclosed shed.  A 7mm Mag should provide all muzzle blast you want...

Just screw a Browning Boss brake on. Makes a big caliber gun double as a short range flamethrower.

I find shooting heavy-recoiling pistols to be great fun...the heavy recoil just lets you know you are shooting something worthwhile !

By the way the real "Eargesplitten Loudenboomer" was the 378 Weatherby necked down to a 22 (can you believe it ?) bullet; NO JOKE !
I read about this one in "cartridges of the world", not sure what edition.
This ridiculous thing wore out barrels after THREE shots due to EXTREME throat erosion...when one says the 30-378 is overbore, they haven't seen anything compared to this one !
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

Man that .22-378 would be a high maintenance outfit.  I remember reading older handgun hunting books and I remember reading that the .22 Jet (I think is was a .357 Mag necked down) was supposed to be a real earsplitter.  As I recall, it was mentioned several times regarding the strange and earsplitting noise it made.

Sorry for the late reply, but I thought I would tell a funny story.  During a Middle Eastern conflict I had my unit of M1A1's lined up to ensure our systems were sighted in with full power service rounds.  Now those things had some blast and with my face out of the turret (20 ft from the muzzle)I felt like someone hit my face with a brick when it went off.  One of our NCO's was watching us shoot while standing next to a tank he thought had completed it's firing.  Well unbeknownst to him that tank had one more shot to go and when that bad boy fired that NCO flew about 10 feet before he hit the ground.  Very similar to the cartoon effect you mentioned

Had a secondary of recoiless rifles in the Army. Back blast from a 106 MM ground mounted on a T&E mechanism has just what you're lookin' for.

After reading the Guns and Ammo review of the 450 S&W, I think we have something like the cartridge I was looking for. At least they say the blast and noise is tremendous.

Man you said it. My father was a leatherneck from way back when. He carried a BAR... getting emotional here... He and his squad were  doing a detail and the had four of those Antose (  recoiless ) rifles go off at the same time. He gets VA benefits because of it. He has a constant ringing in his ears now. Some one mentioned the 10" 223 contender with a healthy helping of 3031, I second that. I would like to throw the 7-30 waters in a the hunter barrel out. When you throw a heavy loading in it you can feel your sinuses break up. I actually made my brother who was spotting for me nose bleed.
