tawney(sp) Pa. .Do you think I could get a shot at that critter before he sees his shadow?
(or would that be considered a "personal attack?) :-D

From what I understand, Bill Murray made a comment when filming the movie "Groundhog Day". I believe when holding up "Phil", he said something to the effect that these things are great barbecued.  :-D

jhalcott,

Being only a couple of dozen miles from Punxsutawney, and having lived in this area my entire life, I suspect you MIGHT get a shot at that critter, BUT, it might be your last shot ever!!!!  The people in this area take Phil most seriously!!!  It's all good fun--I think.

I think he might not see his shadow this year--how 'bout that?...BCB

I used to take a small BBQ when hunting.Once, I put a young ground hog on it to see how they taste. Imagine a hand full of rubber bands and a beef boullion cube. I chewed that  first (& only)bite for 20/25 minutes!.
I would take them to a colored man that worked with my father-in-law. He loved them.I tried a leg that he had cooked and the reaction was the same. After that I stopped head shooting them and took what ever shot I got.

Well, maybe Phil will see has shadow!!! And so it goes again.

Yes, groundhogs can be good food if they are skinned properly and prepared properly.  They have some type of scent glands under their front arms that must be removed.  The young ones are the best.  Larger ones should be avoided.

We would soak them in concentrated salt brine overnight and then cook them in a pressure cooker with onions and mustard seeds.  Then to the grill with whatever you wanted on them.

I can live with or without them--mostly without them...BCB

I listened to it live on a local FM station, and Phil saw his shadow at 0731 hours.  Last I heard, the partying was still going on in Punxysutawney!!!  It is an escape from the winter blues...BCB

I donno about that...  Some of us here in Brookville and DuBois(20 mile north and NE of Punxy) are talking about shooting him ourselves.   We haven't had a summer in 2 or 3 years.
