To me the worst one I had was a 358 JDJ.  It was braked but I broke 3 grip bolts before I bought a hardened bolt.  I currently have a 350 Rem Mag Encore that is more tolerable than the JDJ.

I've had people tell me I was nuts for getting the 350 but a 458 Win?!  I would pay good money to WATCH someone else shoot it.  I also remember someone saying they had an unbraked 416 Rem Encore.  You guys are way too manly for me - I'm taking my kniting needles and going back to the kitchen where I belong..............

Whitetail:  It has to do with having mental control over recoil.  My 458 Is braked.  Recoil is not no where as bad as it would seem.  Also my 50 Alaskan is braked.  A buddy's wife shot it with a load using a 700 gr 50 BMG bullet at close to 1400 fps.  I have a pic of me shooting my 458 but I sure would like to see Thomas shooting an unbraked 458.  I am sure it would be pretty rough.  But a braked 458 is a real hoot to shoot.[/b]

I've got 15" Bullberry's in 375 H&H & 416 Rigby, both with the muzzle brake.  The recoil is not that bad - both are full bull taper.  Recoil from my 454 Super Redhawk doesn't bother me either - I just make sure that my non-firing hand is completely underneath my firing hand before I touch it off.  Last night I got stung though - shot my dad's super blackhawk w/ a Garrett load & the grip panels shattered in my hand on the first shot.  They were Ajax simulated ivory.  Guess you live & learn...just ordered a set of Lett mircadas.

I find it easier to shoot hard-kicking handguns than hard-kicking rifles.  My shoulder and my lower back always ache after an afternoon with the rifles, but with a handgun you have your whole arm to absorb recoil.

For me the main thing with a handgun is making sure your fingers aren't getting smacked by the trigger guard.  For years I kept the old-style grips on the TC, and couldn't stand shooting the 44 mag barrel.   When I finally changed grips, that barrel suddenly become my new best friend!  (Same thing when I bought a SRH 454 Casull - back of the trigger guard was killing my middle finger, put Hogues on it and now it is a joy to shoot.)

The way the recoil rolls the hand also makes a difference for me.  While I was cursing the 10" iron-sighted 44 mag barrel, I was enjoying shooting a 14" non-ported 45-70 barrel with a scope.  The extra weight and length really altered the quality of the recoil.  It pushes a lot harder, but more of a hard, friendly shove than a vicious beating.  And leaves me saying "Ooh yeah!" rather than "Ow! Ow! Ouch!!" :D
