Is it possible to put a heavy 12 ga. barrel on a handi frame. I have heard it both ways and figured someone here will know.

Any of the shotgun barrels except the 10ga can be fitted to a rifle frame, but not the other way around, no rifle barrel can be fitted to any shotgun frame. This is direct from H&R on their accessory barrel page. FYI, shotgun chamber pressures at a max normal of 14000psi for the 3½" 12ga are well below most all rifle pressures....

The gun in question is a .223. A friend has the same gun and sent it in to change the barrel to the heavy 12. He got a message on his phone saying that they could not put it on that gun. I thought a rifle frame would fit anything but a rimfire

If the frame is an older model, 1986 or older IIRC, they won't fit any barrel to it as it was made prior to the current H&R ownership. That would be my guess as to why they would not fit a barrel to it. I would feel comfortable picking up a used 12ga barrel for it and fitting it myself, Donaldo has done just that and he's been real happy with the results. The 12ga barrels are available on Ebay regularly and are frequently available at gun shows and local gunsmiths/gun shops.

Additional barrels may be added to firearms of our manufacture since 1987 only, with a serial number that begins with N or H. We do not install additional barrels on any other manufacturer’s firearms.
Additional barrels are available as additional barrels only. We will not exchange barrels for existing barrels on shotguns and rifles, as it will change the model.
Rifle frames may be fitted with additional rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloader barrels.
Shotgun frames may be fitted with additional shotgun and muzzleloader barrels only.
We do not sell additional barrels outright. All barrels must be factory fitted.
We do not sell barrel blanks or do custom calibers.
In order to obtain an additional barrel(s), the stock, forend and frame (receiver) must be sent to us so they may be properly hand-fitted to the barrel, to be sure they are correctly head-spaced and proof-tested.

you can have nef install the 20ga ultraslug barrel on your rifle frame but the only frame you can use for the 12ga ultraslug barrel is the 10ga frame.to bad too but thats the way it is.

The Ultra Slug Hunter 12 gauge is actually a 10 gauge barrel reamed out to 12 gauge...if that's the one he wanted it won't go on any other frame except the 10 gauge frame...this is what the factory told me several years back...

Well that makes sense now. To bad a rifle can't be mounted to a 10 ga frame so I could start from there. Oh well, I am happy with .223. Thanks for the input guy.

I bet NEF has to make alot of calls about that barrel.

:D , Welcome aboard 26 and sorry to chime in so late. You have figured out I guess that the "heavy 12" you spoke of (never heard it called that before hence the possible confusion) is really the size of a 10 gauge barrel. Your .223 can be fitted with any other 12 gauge barrel or any other 12,16,20,28, or .410 barrel for that matter as well as many other centerfire rifle barrels...Glad to have you here and visit often!!!....<><....
