Author Topic: Marlin 27S 25-20 Pump action question (Read 2183 times)

I bought an old Marlin 27S 25-20, sorry it is not a lever action but a slide action. From what I have read about them there is supposed to be some kind of safety. There is a bulls eye type metal screw head on the right action side plate that slides when the hammer is moved but it does not impede the hammer fall. It does not have a serial number as it was not required on these old rifles. Anyone had one of these?

I have a 27S in 32-20 and my brother has one in 25-20!

I think that the button on the right side was designed to speed up the unloading process! I don't know about my brothers 25-20, but my 32-20 will fire (actually rapid fire) if you hold that button and operate the slide! My advise is check it out EMPTY to see if the hammer falls!

Your best bet is to open the magazine tube to unload, then rack the one out of the chamber!

Safety note: These rifles don't have a slide/hammer interlock! Meaning that if you hold the trigger back (in the fire position), the rifle will fire as fast as you can operate the slide!

Chuck thanks for the tips, you don't even want to know what I did to my basement wall yesterday when I cycled a round through the action to see if it ejected OK. Luckily the 25-20 does not have enough power to go through a coffee can of brass, sheet rock, foam insulation and a block wall, the wall survived. It is a little touchy, I don't know why they put that sliding button on the side, see no function for it.

The sliding button on the right side is to allow the pump handle to operate with the hammer back. The hammer should not drop when it is functioned this way. If your hammer drops when you work the slide, with the slide release engaged, your gun has a big problem!

I just checked out my rifle and the slide button actually serves no purpose!
When I hold it back, the slide cannot be operated!

So, I guess when I take it out again, I will just use EXTREME caution when I unload!

Anyone have an idea where I might find an outer magazine tube with the latch?
