What bullet to use
« on: February 05, 2003, 05:45:34 PM »
Hey guys , I just bought a 223 bolt action and was wonderin the best bullets for fox and coyotes . Was told full metal jackets for less pelt damage . Also , I have never called either a fox or yote in so any pointers would be helpfull . I did hunt the other morn. after a storm  near a swamp we drove lots of yotes out of durring deer season but absolutle no action . I was set up in the edge of the feild on the east side of the swamp , to the north was open feild and couth wa another swamp . the wind was out of the south . Maybe just not hungry dogs?

It is a Savage 110 . I'm not sure of the twist tho . Not top of the line but I only paid $200 with that cheap simmons scope . But for now its just fine I guess .

I'm trying Hornady's 40gr V-max.  Shouldn't leave an exit wound and will probably destroy internal organs.

They also, have a 50gr.

Good Luck,

Steve

if u r trying to save the fur DONT shot a Nosler BT or a Hornady V-Max try a factory load in a 50gr or a 55gr soft point bullet  in REM or Win  ammo the first too i talk about will leave a hole and sometimes a big one so try a soft point bullet good luck varmit master

Really stay away from V-Max type of bullets. Try some of the soft points in various weights, see what you rifle likes to shoot. Hornays's 50 or 55gr. soft points are good shooting bullets and they won't break you for the cost.
If you don't care about hides there is a ton of good quality bullets out there. Whatever you do, have fun...

Yes Dr. D is right hornady has a 50 or a 55gr bullets that would do what u want to do and STAY away from the full metal jacket bullets if u dont  hit him in the head or backbone u will have to track him and he would end up getting away or getting bit going in the brush looking for him r u going to reload or shoot factory loads good luck

I will be shooting factory loads . I saw winchester  55gr pointed soft points at the store the other day and was steered away from the fella working . He told me too much pelt damage . I dont think he evens hunts these critters so I wanted you guy to fill me in . Thanks alot . I will try a couple deiff brands to see which shoots the best and go from there .

HI trapper it sounds like too me that man that the store  dont know his bullets sounds like he dont need to be working in the hunting store more like a flower shop   :)  that Win 55gr soft point will work just right for what u want to do or Remington makes a 55gr pointed soft point  just stick to a soft point bullet STAY away from the Noslers BT and Hornady V-MAX they will make a hole Hope i have help good luck and let me know how your hunting goes :D
