45/70 Accessory Barrel
« on: February 02, 2005, 04:34:29 PM »
Does the 45/70 accessory barrel come drilled and tapped for a scope rail?  The H&R site that says the rifle has open sights and it's tapped for scope mounts but the accessory barrels only say they have open sights.

ALL barrels that come from H&R 1871 come drilled and tapped for the scope rail.

Montanan is 100% correct and the 45-70 accessory barrel does come with sights and is drilled & tapped for the scope base. You can request the scope base instead of the sights with an accessory barrel when you place your order at no extra cost, but if you want both, it'll cost ya. If you order the barrel with a scope base, the rifle will come with blind screws in the sight mount holes in the barrel.

Thanks...

I am considering getting a 45/70 barrel but I'd like the option of being able to mount a low power scope or red dot on it.  It sounds like I'd be OK getting the barrel with the open sights and mounting a scope rail on it later.

My suggestion is ( the you sound in your last post ) Get it with sights
and with scope base, It cost less that way in the long run, Just MHO.
Most of my barrels I have taken open sights off, Order scope bases
from H&R, had to pay shipping chargeson them.
I think H&R bases are the best. Marv.

Ol' Marv is right on....get em both, the Ultra rail for sure instead of the standard rail.

You will want to reload the 45-70

My first NEF is a .45/70 and I get great savings from reloading with a simple and cheap Lee Classic Loader.  I enjoy making the cartridges as much as I do shooting them.

I load:
Win Brass
Rem 300 gr JHP
50.0 grains IMR3031
Win LR Primer

This load costs me 50 cents a round verses the one dollar store price.

I strongly suggest you reconsider.

Enjoy!
