Day at the Range .44 Mag ( Heavier Crimp )
« on: February 02, 2005, 05:35:13 PM »
Went to the range today with my SBH Bisley.
I was getting pretty good groups with 24.0 gr. H-110 under a Magtech 240gr. SJSP,  Avg. groups about 2-2.5" @ 50yd.
I was thinking my bullets needed a Heavier crimp so I gave em' one.
Now my groups are tighter, shot a  1.38" others just under 1.5" :-D
I think I will give the Cast bullets a try again, With a Heavier crimp
of coarse.
Also Gunn'a try some 2400 Powder.
Failure is not an option

Hylander,
As a general  rule H110 & Win 296 require a heavy crimp to allow them to properly ignite before the bullet leaves the case. The heavy crimp and/or Mag primers help in this respect. Aliant 2400 is not as hard to light nor is it picky about primers.

8) If you are not already using one, Redding's Profile Crimp Die solves a lot of the crimp problems.
No such thing as too dead.

I don't know how you are doing it but if you will seat and crimp in two separate steps, you can put a great looking crimp on the bullets that you will never have problems out of.  I always use 2 steps with my larger calibers and started just doing it with everything out of habit.  GS

I've found the best tool for ANY kind of crimping job is the Lee Factory Crimp Die. It allows you to place a very tight crimp without ever collapsing a case. They are inexpensive, and well worth the money.  Bill T.

I'll agree with Bill T. This is something Lee makes that really does the job.
