yeah, i've seen the blow up pics. they are impressive, but does this mean every barrel in 444 is a trip to the hospital or are most people shooting the 444 with out problems

38 super, you are correct. Those pic's are not the norm for the 444Marlin contenders. As long as you stay in the Remington factory round pressures you will not have a problem. I also spoke with SSK and they told me not to use the Hornady light magnum 265 gr loads in the modified 444Marlin Contender barrel. I have seen several 444 Marlin barrels that SSK rechambered and not one problem. I also owned one and did not have any problems.  :D

Ultimately, it's a question of how much risk you are willing to accept.  I have a couple of barrels chamberd to .30-40 Krag and lots of folks think that's dangerous, but the Krag has a significantly smaller case head than the .444 and I think it's fine.  Of course, I ride motorcycles, too.  I do not, however, do wheelies in traffic, and I don't intend to own a Contender barrel in .444 either.

Ron,

Well put. I've shot a bunch of rounds though my S-14 444 and still have all my fingers. One can overload just about any cartridge that a contender barrel is chambered for a point where a barrel or frame failure occurs. No big surprise there. The safety margins are smaller with a 444 as compared to other chamberings, so one just needs to be careful.

38 super, you will get all kinds of feed back from people and even some that don't make any sense at all. Call SSK up and speak to them about the 444Marlin barrels. If you listen to people that don't even own one or have never owned one, you will be as lost as they are.  :D  I am sure if it was that dangerous it would not have been done. JMHO

The 445 super mag is an interesting round too...

and I decided upon in instead of the 444. It's quite a bit more powerful than a 44 mag, not quite the power of a 444, a little more efficient/less blast IMO.
