I believe the 7-08 and the 243 Win are based on the 308win.

Ed :  If your concern is wheather the bolt face would be the same yes they will as they take the same shell holder, however the 7mm08 is somewhat shorter and you might have to do something as far as the follower to get it to feed well. :D    JIM

7mm/08 brass is readily available from Midway, Sinclair, or any other shooting supply house. I think the last time I ordered some it was $23.00 per 100. (from Midway)

Let's back up a bit and put it into historical perspective. The 7x57 Mauser predated the .30-06. in effect the '06 is a lengthened slightly 7x57 opened for .308" bullets. Off of this case many wildcats were born and many of them have been civilized and made into factory rounds.

The .308 is merely this same case shortened. The 7-08 and .243 as well as the .260 Remington are all commercial versions of this shortened case necked to different diameters.

The .257 Roberts and 6MM Remington are the old 7x57 with bullet diameter only changed.

I have found Hornady cases best in 7-08 personally. I've used others but like theirs best. Not sure if they sell them as component brass tho or if you have to buy the ammo to get them. That's the way I've gotten all of mine.

I'd rebarrel your 98 for the 7mm Mauser. The receiver is long enough and if you reload you can get more power than the 7mm-08. The 7mm-08 gives the same performance as the 7mm Mauser standard factory loads. The Mauser is down loaded because of the 100 year old rifles around.

Unless your barrel is ruined I'd say that the 8mm Mauser already on there would make for a better moose/bear cartridge than the ones you're mentioning.  And for just a smidge more "oomph" (and cheaper/more common brass) you could have it reamed out to 8mm-06.  And of course there's always the good ol' .30-06 if you do need to rebarrel.

If you are a bit recoil shy though then the 7x57 Mauser would probably feed better out of the 98 than the 7mm-08 would.
