357 Herrett barrel,,,bore pitting,,,,
« on: February 04, 2005, 02:35:16 AM »
looking at a super 14" barrel in .357 Herrett. Some pitting in muzzle end, 3" side. Also,,can see where neck/lead area is off center,,some 'ring' visible only on one side of the throat. ALSO,,, has left hand twist with EIGHT grooves.
Seems like I've read these old 8 groove bores gave higher pressure with lower velocity.
Anyone tell me more?
Even for $100 I think this barrel might not measure up. I know 10" is supposed to handle this cartridge well, but I like 14" to get the muzzle blast down and 'out front' some.
tell my your thoughts.

Good idea to get the blast further away w/ this ctg.. I don't use barrels longer than 10" personally on my contenders, but, if it happens to shoot ... and 100 beans... probably worth a try ... you could always off it to the next guy that thinks that!!!  If it will happen to group, you will have, IMHO, the best large hunting ctg in the contender lineup (not to include ssk..etc.)   Marty    BTW is it poor enough to "deal" a bit ??? Less is sometimes more!!
