when using a d-loop(string loop) is it necessary to use the string nocks?

I do. Unless the gap between the loop knots is tight enough, you will have an inconsisten knocking point.

You can use a regular noc set with the arrow nocked beneath it and then install the loop beneath the nocked arrow. It all depends on the intended use of the d-loop.
