The elusive .41
« on: February 04, 2005, 12:45:22 PM »
Okay guys, I need help--again.  My search for a good .41 Mag.revolver gets curiouser and curiouser.  I keep chasing princesses and finding frogs.  Today, while traveling to view another "frog" I found a Smith and Wesson 657 7.5" barrel, with Power Port.  Beautiful condition, but I know next to nothing about S&W and less about the 657 and Power Port.  They are asking $700 for the gun.  That stretches my budget, but it is beautiful and if you guys say it's a good and accurate model and the Power Port isn't to bad,  I may buy it.  I have no great love for ported barrel, but I always wear muffs anywhere and I really don't "need" the recoil to prove how tough I am. I just love my .41 Contender and want a revolver in that caliber.  HELP!

A ported .41RemMag is sort of redundant. I know they are out there but the only thing you will really get with that is increased blast and nasty looks at the range. Of all the .41s’ I have none are ported. My newest are a S/W 675-5 PC and a Ruger SBH Hunter in .41RemMag from my local gun guy that he order from Davidson’s. Both were less than your quoted price and included a Leupold scope. Hope you find one to enjoy.
Love those .41s'

Just go ahead and buy a Freedom Arms and be done with it. They make both the FA83 and FA97 in it so you get your choice of what size/weight gun you want. You'll be assured of absolute perfection in the gun and it will shoot better than you do. Yeah the price hurts but it only hurts ONCE. So if you've been buying and trying you've likely already wasted enough to pay for one and now are talking about paying almost half the cost for another factory made gun that's gonna disappoint.

You dont need porting for a 41 mag pistol. I got a 657 nonported for $555. I would say try and get one without the port. The 657 is a great gun!

I'd jump at the chance to have a 657 M/G.

I went ahead and bought that Md 657.  With the information you guys gave me I was able to get the price down and felt pretty comfortable that this was a good pistol for me at a fair price.  Loaded up some shells and headed for the range before this latest snow storm hit.  This thing is going to be a shooter!  Plus, it feels just right  and  brings out the best in me.  This may replace one of my Contenders as a hunter.  Thanks for the help.  I am constantly amazed at the quality of the people I meet here on GBO and the amount of free support I get.   Thanks, again.

Graybeard,  that FA is in the future, but I've started a special fund towards it.  May even have to sell a few Contender barrels!  I will have one eventually.
