I don't remember the deer story of 600 yards but, I do remember the story about the Volkswagen sized rock at 600 yards? Your not mixing stories here are you? I think the rock story is in his book "Hell I was There", if I'm not mistaken? I'll get the book out and check.

I use to carry a .44 now I leave it at home, it's too heavy, and all the bears I ever saw ran the other way anyhow...

In Africa we would often use 12 ga. sabots for personal protection. I excpect they'd work well in Alaska as well.
