500 Recoil ?'s
« on: February 06, 2005, 04:41:41 AM »
Now that there are quite a few of them out there, can you guys that know, tell us how they shoot? I am not that recoil sensitive but admit that I don't like getting stomped in the ground. How much more recoil is there with the 500 as opposed to the 44 mag?
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Recoil is perceived by everyone different. But when I shoot my 500 MAG and them grab my 44 MAG, I notice a big difference. It would be compared to going from a 44 MAG to a .38 special. The recoil is heavy on the 500 MAG but it is how you control it, that makes the difference. Not knowing how to control a heavy recoiling gun can get you hurt. Grip, stance, the way you bend your arms, there are a bunch of variables. If you think a 44 MAG has a lot of recoil you will notice the 500 MAG is more.  :D

I happen to like recoil in handguns. I have a 4 inch S&W500 and a BFR in 500MAG. I shoot them more than any of my other guns.

I've been shooting some cast bullets in mine at about 1550fps. 300gr SWc and 41 grains of H4227. The recoil is very controllable. Crisp, yet controllable. I'm finding the faster powders give me a more controllable recoil too.

I compare them to the felt recoil of a heavy H110 load in a 250gr 44mag and a 44 spec shooting a 200g. Noticeable, but not that bad. I shot 50 rounds yesterday and I don't feel any lasting effects.

I would actually say that I have shot 45-70 in a 15" Contender and it was much more abusive.

One piece of advice...  don't shoot Creedmore without a good leather blast shield!

500 S&W Barrel for Encore
« Reply #3 on: February 13, 2005, 05:13:15 PM »
Greetings,

I've gotten a 500 S&W carbine barrel for my Encore.  Recoil for this thing was too much for me, so I added a muzzlebrake.  It's still a little too rough on my shoulder.

Anyways, I shot a deer this past season with the carbine, using a Hornady 350 XTP bullet.  The bullet discintigrated on the deer, barely penetrating six inches.  While the deer dropped almost immediately, I was really turned off by all the fragments inside of him.  I think this bullet is made for pistol velocities!

I'm now trying to work up a Barnes 275 grain load, using W-296 powder.  Anyone know of a website with suggested load data?

Thanks in advance,

B. Noz.

A couple of weeks age,I found out my neighbor a bought a 500 w/4".We took it  out to try it out.To me it wasn't that much harder than my SBH .44 using 250 gr rounds. We were using 350's in the 500.The rise of the muzzle wasn't much at all;but I did notice it pushes fairly hard  against the thumb. But really not bad at all.The rubber grips I'm sure helped a great deal.If the 500 had the Scrimshawn grips like my SBH,I'm sure it would bite.Ran 15 or so rounds thru it.To me,it was a pleasure to shoot.Very loud with one h--l of a muzzle flash   ...............Rick

Dogshooter,
When I'm shooting my 500, or any other gun, I tend to focus on sight alignment, trigger squeeze and breathing.  So my concern is what happens down-range at the target.  Therefore the subsequent recoil seems to be just a minor nuisance that I put up with.
The 500 is loud and does have a heavy recoil, but it is quite manageable.
Best,
