?45 colt with SST/XPB bullets like the 460S&W?
« on: February 06, 2005, 10:26:49 AM »
Just read the article in Shooting Times about the 460 S&W and got to thinking about the 200gr Hornady and Barnes bullets used in that round. I don't have a 45 colt barrel for my contender but got to thinking this might be something interesting to try. I wouldn't be suprised if you could get around 1600-1700 fps and could flatten out the trajectory a bit.

Whatya think?

The 45 cal bullet used in the 460 I have heard is a rifle profile , I have never had decent accuracy from a 200 grain .45 bullet of standard profiles in 45 colt.

Great question Pinkerton.  Now ya got me thinking it may be a great idea for my hunting loads for my .45 Colt.  the only thing now is who would have the answer to our question?  Is it Hornaday that makes the bullet or someone else?
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

Lawful Larry,

Hornady has made an adaptation of thier SST Muzzle loading 45 cal. for the 460 S&W, looks like they maybe size differently and add a crimp groove.  The bullet is a spire point with polymer tip.

The XPB is a spitzer HP that CorBon had Barnes make up for them for the experimental loadings for the 460.

reading the article got me thinking of what might be possible using these 200gr spitzer type bullets in the old 45 colt in the contender.  Maybe a new and interesting twist for the old cart.  I don't have a 45 colt, but this maybe just the reason to get a contender barrel made for it, I could imagine these bullets making the speed faster and trajectory flatter, maybe even make a 10" Contender 45 colt 175-200yrd whitetail setup possible? any reason for a new barrels a good one. :-D

But why? Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I think we're forgetting the entire concept of what makes large bore handguns effective. It's got nothing to do with velocity. Even maxing it out the velocity is way less than that of some rounds many consider marginal.

What makes big bore revolvers so effective is a large diameter heavy hunk of lead. Add a wide meplat for some shock effect and plenty of weight to punch thru no matter the obstacle and you have one effective killing machine. Heavy bullets hold velocity better and thus penetrate.

Light bullets in large bore sizes loose velocity like a rock. They don't penetrate and still don't really have all that much velocity to start with compared to even a .30-30.

Sorry guys but you're letting the hype and hyperbole get to you.

I have not had good luck with 200 grain bullets in 45 colt.  I would guess the rifling twist is the problem.  If I read the article right in Shooting Times, the 460 revolver has a variable rate of twist.  It starts out slow and increases the rate of twist as the bullet progresses down the barrel.

Dang it now GB how come ya gots to come in and get all logical and stuff?  :P

Can't disagree with you, but it does make me curious.  I'd like to see what they would do, in the end I'd still have a 45 colt barrel that I could still shoot the big old fat flat meplat bullets with that knock the snots n' stuffin outta critters
