FA 44Spl. Range Report
« on: February 06, 2005, 03:27:16 PM »
It's the shooter not the gun.  :shock:

Shot the FA yesterday and today. It shoots anything you load through it good. Have loaded everything from 180gr. JHP's to 265gr. RNFP-GC's. A total of 300 rounds has been shot in the gun, so far. 100 jacketed and 200 cast.talked to Greybeard last night and he said what you have to do is decide on WHAT bullet you want to shoot in it. Then you can work on fine tuning your load. I did put ten rounds, two cylinder fulls into a 3" Shoot-n-See target today. and that was using those 265 grainers, pretty good kick, I must say. Especially for the smaller frame and the 5-1/2" barrel.
Cleaned it up tonite, man what a breeze to clean this thing. No large powder residue anywhere and NO Leading what so ever.
Fellas.... these guns are what they claim to be. Probably the most accurate handgun you can buy.
My only delimma is, what bullet to choose.  :?
I'll update on groups in specific later.

Glad you are now pleased with it Dennis. I have no doubt the gun is more accurate than the shooter. All three of the FA's I've played with have sure been able to outshoot me.

I'd use that Keith bullet you had in mind up front iffen I was you. Now as I've said iffen it was ME tho  :lol: I'd be using the Lyman 429244 cuz that's my favorite like the Keith is for you.

Just figure out what powder charge works best and then just shoot it.

Bill;

You are probably right, that 250 Keith will be my first choice. I'm just amazed that the gun will shoot just about anything. A plain base bullet is a lot cheaper to shoot than gas check. Them gas checks are about as high as jacketed bullets.
But you know, one thing that those gun writers don't mention is the way the cylinder and the barrel looks after firing the gun. There is no heavy residue of powder fouling in the cylinder or around the forcing cone. When you go to clean it up, you don't have to keep scrubbing the chambers or around the forcing cone. It must be the steel they use that is less pourous and the tight tolerences.
But as I said last nite, it's like learning to shoot all over again, when you are used to only DA revolvers like the Smiths.
I know one thing, I hope to have another one with in a year. I'm Very impressed with them.

Joe;

Thanks a bunch.
This gun gets more beautiful, the more I look at it.
I believe that it's got to be the ideal toting handgun. The size is just perfect for walking around the woods, but plenty enough power if a shot at a deer comes along.
I've never been a single action fan, but I think I am as of now.
Plan on getting another one within the year. It will be a Mod. 83.
I would like to know of your experiences with these guns.

De41mag,

I don't think i could say any more than has already been said about the FAs. Every thing you do with them is easier, shooting, Cleaning, The Accuracy is unmatched. The fit and finish is flawless which makes them easier to clean and fun to shoot. I'm limited in words to fully show my appreciation for such a fine Revolver. In my mind they are the top shelf when it comes to hand guns. Have a good day Dennis and enjoy your FAs.

Had another good day at the range Joe;

These guns just seem to love cast bullets. I'm using HS-6 with a 250gr. Keith and the accuracy is great! Took the load from a 2003 Handloader magizine, that the author shot a Leadhead Keith bullet, which I'm using. He said he used 10.0gr of HS-6 w/ the bullet and was able to get .70" for 5 shots. I'm using it, but the gun is more accurate than I am. I can get 3 shots touching, sometimes 4, but that fifth one sure is tough. But it's me for sure. Also the Speer 200gr. GDHP for the 44 Spl. looks very promising, but more work is needed. Had 10 shots under 3 inches with this bullet today.
Yea... Joe, you're right, can't say enough good for these FA's. They're shooters for sure.
