22 HORNET on a SB1
« on: February 07, 2005, 05:53:17 AM »
A friend of mine has a 28ga SB1 with a 410/45 barrel & a 22 Hornet barrel. NEF only sells the honet on a SB2 frame. I told him it is probably OK because they use to come on the topper frames years ago. Am I wrong or right, would not want to steer him wrong to do something he should,t so I thought I would ask the experts.
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I doubt the Hornet will create enough back thrust to hurt.  I'd not go up to any other centerfires though.

These guns are too inexpensive to take any risks.

I have a topper 158 .22 hornet. I would suspect he wouldn't have any problem.I almost bet the SB1 frame is stronger that my topper frame. :D

resurrecting an old thread here...  I did a search on SB1 frames because I have a Topper Deluxe Classic in 12 gauge and was thinking that a Hornet barrel would look really good on that frame.  With the walnut stock and nickle frame, I think it would be great.  I thought that the TDC did have an SB1 frame, but I see a reference here indicating that might not be the case.  Does the TDC have an SB1 frame and would it handle a Hornet barrel?  And, just to confirm, NEF won't do this fitting, right?

All shotgun frames are sb1s, unless its a shotgun barrel that has been fitted as an accessory to a rifle (sb2) frame. Originally the old H&R Toppers used only one frame, on which combos were available: 30-30, 22 Hornet, 357mag, 44 mag and 45-70. These old cast frames later were morfed into the sb1 frames. NONE of these Topper or sb1 frames are as strong as the current sb2 frames. And you are correct, the current H&R/NEF shop will not fit a rifle barrel to anything but a sb2. I guess the excetion is the 45 Colt Survivor, which I have been told is on a sb1 frame. And, one should remember the stength limitations when handloading for the older Toppers. In the years past (early 70s) I had both 357 and 30-30 Toppers rechambered, but was lucky enough not to get into problems. I would not do that again.  Besides, I consider the old Toppers collectables now.

I do believe all 10 gauge receivers are the exception to this...they are  listed as a SB2.. in the  2005 catalog from NEF...perhaps they are heat treated the same as the rifle receivers...

I have swapped my barrels so much I have a hard time remembering which frame what is on.  The color case hardening is the give away, if I would take time to look.  However, I believe I have my .357 Mag and .45-70 on 12 gauge shotgun receivers.  My Hornet and .223 are on SB2 receivers, but I don't have a problem with putting them on shotgun receivers.  That being said, I don't think any caliber of higher intensity should be used on the shotgun receivers, i.e. the .223 is the max pressure I will use, but a .30-30 with its lower pressure would be OK.

Do I need to spell out a disclaimer that following my example is done at your own risk?
