can anyone recomend a 1911 style pistol that is relatively affordable but still a decent pistol. always wanted one but cannot afford the higher priced ones. mainly used for target shooting and home defense. thanks in advance for any info.

I have two of the Springfield Armory models and really like them. They won't shoot 2" groups at 25 yds., but I couldn't hold that well even if they could. I use them for fun target shooting and they are plenty accurate for me. I have the full size and 4" Champion version and both are very reliable. They aren't Colts or Kimbers, but I'm satisfied. I don't shoot 1000's of rounds per year, so not as hard on them as some folks.

Have heard good things about the Rock Island Armory ones also, but have never shot one. They are well under $400. around here. Have seen them as low as $300.

Once you shoot a 1911 style you will love it.

thanks for the reply. i will check out the ria. could be just what i am looking for. need something bigger than a 22 for home protection. i testified against two thieves awhile back.put them in jail for awhile.due to get out soon. they might decide to try a pay me back. thanks again for the info.

A friend of mine has a Rock Island for sale for $350. It is new in the box with two big name magazines (I forget whose, I think Chip McCormick). He would ship it to a dealer near you. If you want more info, just e-mail me. I'm very impressed with this Rock Island. 44 Man

It's been reported that Taurus is coming out with a 1911 with some nice features - and the suggested retail is about $450, no telling what the market price will be.

Springfield Armory GI edition 1911. Well made pistols in the $400 range.

First off, this is my first post. So hello every one. Second is , you have to ask your self "what you want" and price will fallow that. You get what you pay for, so paying a little more up front may not be ask bad as upgrades later. As for as my newest 1911, it is a new 2005 SFA-A1. I like to at lest get night sights, The GI SFA dont even have that "as far as i have seen". You can get a great 1911 for about 750-850 with tax, to me that is not a bad price for what you are getting. The most I have ever payed for a 1911 is 1000.00 with tax on a Kimber TLE L.A SWAT. I can't tell to much of a diff. in that to my other Kimbers or SFAs. But, try and get what you like, even if it takes a credit card or saving. You will thank your self later, dont be in a hurry. There not going any where. Cheack out all you options though, checker palm grips, ajustable night sights, night sights, trigger pull and size. I shoot 5 ince only, I see no need in any thing smaller, and yes I have a CCW and have never had a problem with CCing it. Hope this helped

What do you consider affordable? What is and isnt affordable will be different for everyone. This tid bit of info would help people to recommend a gun for you.

Used Dan Wessons are a good value for the dollar as well as the Springfield GIs which has already been mentioned. Depending on the new purchase price of a gun when looking for a used one I see them around 50-150 bucks cheaper so you might keep that in mind as well.

If you want a good functional gun then you will find what your looking for with the GI but if you want the extra stuff, commander hammer, three hole trigger, high ride beaver tail etc the price will jump up fairly quickly. If you find one used you are really getting a better deal because you will be buying at a depreciated price and should be able to get your money back if need be. When you buy new it takes the market about four years or so to increase MSRP prices so that used guns will fetch the same price as a new one did four years ago.

I picked up a used Kimber Pro Carry a few months about for a touch over 400 bucks. If you look to used guns try find someone to help you inspect the gun if youre not sure what you are looking for.

Dusty.....I have heard good reports on the Ruger 345, too. But....it doesn't fall into the 1911 category. 45acp - Yes, 1911 - No.

I will sugest the Springfield Armory 1911A1 GI model again.

You might also find one of the Old Rollmark "1991A1" Colt's used within your price range. They are actually very nice 1911's, but were no accepted well by consumers and resulted in reduced resale value.

Caveat emptor. "Bargain" 1911s tend not to stay bargains for long, unless your expectations of them are low. Start with guns like Kimbers that retail for about $650 but can be had for about $500. It'll probably save you money in the long run.

thats an excellent price on that gun and those rock rivers are great guns. If i had a little extra cash id be all over that deal.

The Rock Island or Armscorp are GREAT guns. For the money, NObody has anything close.
With a little time and some parts, you can make that RI shoot with or outshoot any Kimber or Springfield. For the money, they are hard to beat.

I have an Armscorp, I put Full length guide rod a Nowlin Pro match trigger kit, an S&A magwell/flat mainspring housing and a National match trigger and National match bushing. I did all my own work fit everything. I will put it against any Kimber or even Wilson for accuracy and reliability.

It will now shoot 1" groups, yes I did say sub 1". It will shoot.

Just my $.02, Some will say BS, But I can back it up.

Jump on that deal for $350, before I do. LOL

Is a "Rock River" the same as a "Rock Island"??
