I was just given a Marlin 1895 Guidegun and was considering getting the Galco Butt Cuff...anyone ever use one, any opinions of them or any other brands...

I have a Galco Butt Cuff that I use on my Winchester 1886 EL  in 45-70 Govt. The same one would fit the Marlin, I believe. It is a very classy and well made item. 8)

I have one in neoprene. I want a nice leather one but I'll have to make it myself. I definately wouldn't want gromets, and I want the shells to be parallel to the stock. Mine will either hold four or six. The bullet tips will be covered. It may have a little flap over the bases. I had a lot of trouble with shells snagging everything and getting pushed out of place. I almost lost shells a few times.

I'm really not interested in carrying extra ammo on my rifle. However Cabela's offers the Beartooth adjustable cheekpiece made of neoprene that I thought was kind of nifty. You insert different size sponge wedges into it to raise the comb height to your liking. I have a Mod 94 scoped with med. height rings and I'm getting one to help alignment.

Just a thought but lots of safari /express style guns and german guns have slide/pop open shell holders in the stock.  I think thats the option I would go with.  They take a little smithing but will produce a much nicer finished product.  I think you can get them from www.NewEnglandCustomGun.com
Hope it helps TC

The only thing I've heard about elastic butt cuffs in general is that if they loose their stretch and you put heavy cartridges in them they can twist on the butt. Some people poke a hole in the bottom and slip it over the sling swivle stud, which will only work if you have a sling swivle stud. They keep making them so they must work.

If you want to go build something into the stock, you used to be able to get steel butt plates with big trapdoors in them. They used to inlet the stock under the butt with a drill to just hold a few cartridges for emergency use. Not as handy or economical as a butt cuff.
If God wanted plastic stocks he would have made plastic trees.

Like Qtip said, they work good for raising the cheekpiece, but if you fill them, they through the balance off . I have one set up my bolt rifle but never carry cartridges in it. I carry my extra shells in a home made pouch on my belt. I took a compact bino carry case and inserted the holder  [cut to fit] , from a box of shells. With a handy rag under it , the bullets are at the right height to grab quickly. My model 94 holds enough rounds that I hardly need to carry any more, but you never know.
