.27 CALIBER RIMFIRE
« on: February 07, 2005, 12:23:32 PM »
At the hardware store this past weekend i found some remington .27 caliber rimfire blanks for a nail gun. Bet you could make a .25-.27 rimfire out of it!

Yes and no. There is about as many powders available for the .22/.17 rimfires available to manufactures as there are powders available to re-loads for the CF calibers. unfortunately most people can't get their hands on that powder and for darn sure you NEVER want to use the charge in a nail gun load for shooting a projectile. You'll likely damage any firearm and/or yourself. While you might make up a few samples for conversation pieces you'll have a pretty hard time loading them.

I've allready used nailgun loads before. It worked OK other than the case exploding, the bullet melting, and brass stuck in my friends hand :)

maggot,  that IS funny!  Reminds me of my misspent youth.  When my mom would get mad at me, she would hide my .22 ammo.  Being a creative kid, I would take some of my dad's ramset blanks, and some .22 cal. pellets and load up the ol' singleshot.

Well I qiuckly found out that those ramset charges were a lot stronger than normal .22 ammo.  They did blow the pellet out the barrel, but also blew a lot of "stuff" back into my face.

It still amazes me that some of us lived to reach adult years without being killed or maimed.

Be careful out there!

When I was a teenager my buddy loaded a 22 LR case with firecracker powder.  It was not black powder, or at least didn't look like black powder.  In any event the case failed and the rifle suffered some damage in the magazine area.

As for nail gun charges, would they make decent blanks in a fire arm?  Used as blanks, there would be next to nothing to constrain the powder gas so pressure should not be very high.

They are not suitable for blanks unless you are going to use them as blanks in the nail gun itself.

I have fired a lot of nail gun loads through a .22 rifle with no damage to the gun.

The loads availible in this area are mostly power level 1,2,3,and 4. Power level 4 will drive a 3 inch nail through a 2x4 into concrete 1 1/2 inches, power level 1 is the weakest.

My testing with the power loads has been remotely fired where there was no possibility of injury should the gun fail. Level 4 loads will blow the rim completely from the case with all bullets I tried(30gr.,40gr.,and 50 gr.).Level 2 loads were the only ones I could fire without splitting the rim
then only with a 30gr. bullet.

Even level 4 loads will not cycle the action of my semi auto when fired as a blank, the breeckblock only moves .010-.015.I have fired many level 4 loads as blanks in my singleshot bolt action J.C.Higgins.I use the level 4 blanks for wing shooting wasps and carpenter bees. The blast of gas will kill them to about 5 feet away.

I have never fired the .25 or .27 caliber blanks and probably never will.
It is to dangerous to fire nail gun loads in a fire arm with projectiles except in controlled experiments.

I am not advocating using nail gun blanks in a firearm for any purpose
because of the possible danger posed,I am merely relating my experience with them.
