Author Topic: Question about a load for a Swede (Read 353 times)

I just bought Lee Dies, 20 rounds of Brass and Hornady 140 grain bullets to load for my 6.5x55 Swede. I checked the loads in my Hornady book and the only powder I had available was IMR 3031. I did not want to set up the powder measure for 20 rounds so I dipped them using a Old Lee dipper set I have. the loads started out at 30.9 grains for a vel of 2300 the next one up was 32.6 grains for a vel of 2400 and on up to a max load of 36 grains for a vel of 2600. For a starting point I decided on the 32.6 grain load only I am using a load of 32.3 grains because the closest I could come using dippers was using a dipper that dropped 28 grains and one that droped 4.3 grains for the 32.3 total. Any one here use a load simular to that and how did it perform for you? Gun is a 96 Mauser made into a Scout rifle with a shorter barrel than the standard 29 inches I settled for a just over 20 inch barrel. Jim

my lee book shows a max of 34.5 imr 30-31 for 2355 with 140 jsp. i load 35.0 with rem 9.5 primer and have used this in cmp matches with good results.
from the bench with open sights it well do 1.5" @ 100 yds. from 29" barrel. this is a very mild load and the rifle almost crys for more but play it safe!

I just shot at 25 yards today to sight the scopes in on 3 milsurps. Anyway with the swede I only had a box of shells reloaded. Got to buy more brass. :shock: Anyway at 25 yards my best group measured one 40 cal sized hole 0.410 for 5 shots.

my book shows 33gr, as a starting load, with 37 as max.
i dont hot rod mine but it sure is accurate! i switched to 4064 for a little more speed but still i stopped at 2500fps. if you cant do it with 140grains at 2500fps, you cant do it!

those long skinny bullets seem to fly well at most any speed. i guess the main concern is what the action will take. there is no advantage to wrecking a piece of history. my load was averaging in high 23xx but coppershooter might be on to something as others have reported good luck with 4064 at 300 m and beyond.
i still have 1.5 lb. of the 30-31 so i'll be working on that for a while. as a side note i used rem brass and its holding up fine with min. strech
