230gr RCBS 45ACP
« on: February 08, 2005, 01:01:53 PM »
I`m getting ready to reload some 45`s. I got a 230gr RCBS mold; and poured a patch of them. Now my question is; there is no crimp groove, but a shoulder. what do you set the O.A.L[over all length] at? do you go all the way to the shoulder or to a set o.a.l.? anybody reload these bullets?I`m getting some cartridges ready in anticipation for my new smith&wesson 1911.

I have that mould and I load them in .45lc which I roll crimp into the Ogie but that is just my modification.  the .45 auto does not use a roll crip but a taper crimp and so there is no groove.  the .45acp headspaces on the mouth/front edge of the brass.  If you seat the bullet so it just seats with the front band fully into the case you should be good to go.

Thanks JB; I thought the same thing, just looks real short. Also after I run them through the sizer the front band is no longer straight all the way around.

Never shot the RCBS bullet but it is a lot like the one we cast. I've loaded lots of them for the locals. I don't remember off the top of my head the OAL but the front shoulder was out of the case perhaps the 25% of it's length. Let us know how the bullet does. Of all the 45-230-RN bullets I've seen, the RCBS mould is the one I'd buy.

Thanks for the reply LAH; I have loaded 20 cartridges already @ 1.270 OAL in anticipation of my new gun. The front band Is out about 25%. so maybe they will work just fine. The only thing I don`t like about the RCBS 45 RN is it`s lube groove; I find it very shallow. Other than that they look nice.

i generally load a dummy round and seat the bullet until the action closes cleanly.  usually i have to seat cast a little deeper than jacketed bullets because of the 452 diameter.   my gun and my buddies' gun really like cast bullets; and so does my pocketbook.

I normally use 1.275 for most 45 ACP loads if memory serves. Let us know how the the shoots.
