Hey, we need to put up a poll...have everyone who gets crud rings identify the lattitude of their location.........

You left out elevation :-)   All of my shooting is at 5,280 or higher.

Oh, by the way, I'm buying a GPR in .54 cal. perc. soon, In case anyone wants an oppurtunity to tell me how smart or how much of an idiot I am .

Not stupid at all.  I've built two of them from kits and one of them has been my main shooter since about 1982.  It has accounted for some big and small game as well as some respectable match scores.

During that same period I owned two TC hawkens as well and as roundball says they are good guns too.

The thing about the GPR is the rifleing is true cut rifling and will cut patches badly for the first 300 or so shots unless you decide to smooth it up in advance.  A tight patch coated with JB bore paste and about 50 or a hundred strokes replaceing the patch about every 10 strokes will save you loads of frustration at the range.  I suspect that many GPRs get left on the rack or sold off because the new owner never gets to the point of having the bore smoothed up enough to shoot well.

However here's another question, Ballistol instructs us to use 1/2 parts Ballistol to 1/2 parts water for cleaning black powder. The result is a thick milky liquid that runs everywhere. It cleans well and seems to lube well. Is this anything like moosemilk? And could someone please send me a definant receipt for moosemilk?

There are quite a few recipes for home brew moose milk.  Mine is 1 part NAPA cutting oil to 10 parts water.  You can use the same stuff at about 1 to 5 or even up to 1 to 8 for a patch lube and shoot it wet or dry.

None of the recipes I've seen for "moosemilk" would be the same as for Ballistol.  Ballistol is a formula that the German military came up with many years ago as a firearm maintenance item.   I don't know exactly when but long long ago....  Anyway, real Ballistol is suitable for many things and is said to be "food grade" meaning that it won;'t poison you I guess.  supposedly it's a good lip balm for chapped lips even!

I think ingesting any large amount of my moosemilk formula would probably kill you dead or make ya very sick.

Why heck,

We haven't had such a good discussion in a long time.  And a 54 Lyman is one great rifle that many use for competition (and win with) at rondys.  You can't go wrong with a Lyman, and a T/C is just as good.

I have shot in California, (Bay Area and in the mountains), and in Idaho.  In the 50 or 60 rifles that I have shot using Goex and moose milk, I have not experienced a crud ring.  I have cleaned crud rings out of friend's rifles, some so bad that accuracy was gone.

I lube after cleaning with wonder lube, but use moose milk lube for all my shooting.

My Moose Milk

10 %  water soluble cutting oil
89 %  water (you have to pour water into oil)
dash of liquid dish soap
dash of window cleaner

There are others and I do not know which is best.  I do know that mine works well for me.

Best of luck with the crud problem.  Sorry it has to happen to such a nice person.
