Lilgun in 44 mag
« on: February 08, 2005, 01:57:09 PM »
My old loads, 20 years to be exact (I still have 'bout fifty), were 20gr 2400 240gr Hornady. That was for a Ruger SBH. I have a new toy coming, a 94 win in 44rm so was wondering about lilgun loads for the 44. I still have about 2/3lb of 2400 in the old hercules can from 1984. I heard that stuff, 2400, is much dirtier than H110. So what do you all think H110 or lilgun. Or what else. Thanks in advance,
Kurt

I prefer:
H-110 From 18.0 grains to 26.1 grains
 CCI-350 Primer

But:
2400 From 15.9 grains to 23.0 grains
 CCI-350 Primer
is usable, as are around 28 other powders...

Hodgdons website has a lot of data on the 44RM in their pistol section including some for lilgun. However in the rifle section they only show two powders. H110 and H4227. I don't consider the 20gr of 2400 to be a hot load in my SBH. I can't find much published rifle data for the 44. I want to eventually work up some warm loads for hunting with Cast Performance 275 grainers.  Am I wrong in assuming the pistol data is ok for the 94 win?. Or should I just get a fresh pound of H110 and start new load development with new cases for the rifle? Thanks again

I would stick with the 2400 for the 44MAG. I have been using it for over 15 years now. But if you want to switch you may also want to try W296. It is about the same as H110.  :D  I use the same loads in my Super Redhawk as I do in my Marlin 1894 44 MAG.

I find that W296/H110 perform the best using the 44mag, using jacketed bullets. Seems lilgun likes bigger heavy bullets, more suitable for the 454 Casull, I have found some strange power spikes with LilGun in my 454 Casull, found a sweet spot, then only one grain hike, still below max load, I could feel the higher pressure and recoil, too touchy for my likes, I like a powder that has a slow to moderate upswing to power, easy to find a good load, not erratic. Just my findings. Only tried it in two types of bullets Hornadys 300gr XTP .452 and Speers 300gr GDHP's .452... Aim small hit small. RAMbo.
P.S. I forgot to mention what caught my eye's using lilgun was the big decrease in CUP comparing to the other book loads using w296/h110, in tern less pressure lower recoil and less beating up on the revolver. Good cocept if it works.

I've tried about all the powders mentioned in my 1894C Marlin with the 240grn bullets. For me, LilGun and #2400 work best with regular primers and mag primers with the H110-W296. My current most accurate load for 100yds is the 245 hard cast #429421 bullet with 23.5-24.5 LilGun and a regular primer.
