Handi recoil pad defect

I noticed tonight my recoil pad a little loose. When I went and checked it, both screws were stripped out.

I've only had this about a month. I think they were stripped when I got it.

Has anybody else run in to this lately on new rifles?

You could tell where they tried to screw it in to the wrong place before they got it on right. There's about half an extra hole.

Pretty easy to fix but kind of an irritant to know, they knew it was defective and sold it any way. Feels like a deliberate attempt to cheat some one, meaning me.

I don't like dealing with that kind of company.

Jack, I have had discussions with others here regarding the same issue. Many recoil pads from the factory come through with several holes in the wood where it appears that other pads were attached and many of the screws are stripped when the gun is aquired new. I seem to think it is more of a problem with the laminate stocks than the "pallet wood" stocks and have even seem it on new synthetic stocks. They may have a machine or person attaching them that seems to lose fine motor control quite often....<><.... :roll:

Yeah Jack you're not the only one. Problem seems (IMO) to be with the laminated stocks more than the solid wood. One's I've worked on the layers in the laminate seem to chip out leaving nothing for the screws to bite into.
As been said here many times, QC at Marlin NEF is seriously lacking.

I refinished a set of stocks and sent it off to factory....came back with screws stripped....it didn't go out that way.... this is prolly from power tool use and not from using a regular screw driver....

Dang, Deadeye, if'n I had that much trouble with stocks sent to H&R with my frames, I wouldn't send em mine either!! :eek: And if they don't need em to fit a barrel, no sense in it!!!

Jack,Unless you're wanting to make them do it, don't send it back.

Buy some hardwood dowling at a local store (1/4" or 5/16"). Drill the screw holes out to whatever size dowel you bought.  Put some wood glue on the dowel and drive it into the hole.  Take a smakk sharp saw and cut them flush with the stock.  Let dry over night.  Place the pad on and poke a sharp object (nail etc) into the stock through the hole in the pad, then drill out the proper size hole for the screw.  It should never come back out.  If the dowel ever fails it's easy to replace.

I also ordered a NEW Monty Carlo stock from NEF to replace synthetic on my 17HMR...the NEW stock had two sets of holes???? Of corse the one that matched up with the butt pad was stripped out!!! :evil:.... I glue some toothpicks in the holes and its good to go again but it really is a pisser... :(

I got it fixed right away. I was just wondering if it's just my Karma or something. I hate  getting something brand new and then find it's got some rinky dink defect. Usually just enough to tick me off and not enough to be worth sending it back, which I think they count on.

All I did was dip some tooth picks in wood glue, jam the old holes full of them and reinstall. Leave it  sit until the  glue hardens and it should be good to go. Works so far.

I know whatcha mean....my Buffalo Classic came in a DoskoSport hard case, one of the latches on the case was broke when I received it, hardly worth sending the whole works back to H&R for a replacement. So, I emailed DoskoSport with a pic of the broken latch, they replied they would send me a replacement latch! Happy ending.... :-D
