Child Punished After Finding Toy Gun At Bus Stop
February 2, 2005

Tuesday morning, a boy waiting for the bus to Oakwood Manor Elementary School, in the North Kansas City School District, dug up what he thought was a gun in the ground.

"It came out real fast. I got a good look at it. It really was a gun. Thank God it was a toy gun," 10-year-old Frasier McCart said.

Frasier wouldn't find out it was a toy until later. He said when he first found it, he wanted to make sure nobody got hurt. Just before the bus arrived at the corner, he put the gun in his backpack so that he could give it to school officials.

"I was thinking, 'I'll give it to the principal, she'll know what to do,'" Frasier said.

"It did look like a real gun," Principal Marla Wasserman said.

She said the boy had good intentions, but while making his way through the hallway to her office, he told another student what he had in his backpack. Wasserman said the boy should not have told another student. The boy's mother said he was then suspended. The principal said she then gave him in-school disciplinary action.

School officials said that McCart's action could have earned him an extended out-of-school suspension, but he will remain in school for the corrective action.

"I'm sitting here wondering, 'Why? What'd I do?' I did the right thing," Frasier said.

His mother is also disappointed.

"It's hard to find somebody that can be honest and do the right thing," said Tracy Johnson. "And to punish him for doing the right thing, that just doesn't paint a pretty picture."

The boy should have been commended for his actions rather than disciplined. The only mistake I can see he made was he should have called the police but being 10 years oldyou can't really fault what he did. This principal should receive a week suspended without pay. Where do thet find these people.    :?

What the child SHOULD have done was to leave the "gun" where it was without touching it, and told the nearest or first adult that he saw.

Even if he had to stand there to shoo other children away, being reprimanded for being late to school would have been preferable to leaving it for a younger child to find, or in this case, taking a fall for picking it up himself.

The child should have been instructed in what the proper actions would have been, rather than being punished for obvious good intention.
They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

Yea we all know as gun owners to teach kids not to touch but how many kids know that? It is one of the first things the  NRA Eddie Eagle class for gun safety for kids stresses. The problem is most schools will not allow it in their schools. Expecially the ones that are really gung ho on zero tolerance. If I started in on what I really thing about zero tolerance GB would definately be sitting me down for a lecture for my conduct.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

This happened in school right? The lesson the student learned, was not to go to adults with your problems.

The school principal only followed policy.  The principal knew it was a bogus thing to do BUt after all we have policy.

It never ceases to amaze me how inside out people get. Zero Tolerance !

Suppose we have zero tolerance for wastful spending ? That would change the way schools and local governemnt would work !

Don't get me started

I think he shoulda left it alone as well & told the bus driver or another adult. It doesnt mention if the kid was familiar with guns or not but if he wasn't & if it was real & if he did what most kids who dont know better would do then the story woulda turned out different. Fact is tho it seems he was trying to do the right thing & IMO shouldnt be punished but rather explained what the right thing to do was & maybe explaining how the actions he did take might have turned out badly.

I wonder tho, given the ignorance most people exibit about guns if the bus driver or another adult passer by would have done much better than he did.

Certainly shouldnt be hard on the kid givin the circumstances & all.
