.451" or .458" cartridges???
« on: February 09, 2005, 01:47:14 AM »
and this is posted here because Contenders are what I am buying.
QUESTION: what 45 pistol rounds [454 Cas.,,460 S&W etc]are 'what' caliber? .451-.452-, or .458?
I am thinking of building a 45/70 x 1.5",,,but have not kept up with the latest pistol rounds and wondered if any are actually .458 caliber.
thanks.

Since no one has stepped up, I'll give my guesses.  Since the 45/70 is a rifle round, I would imagine that the bullets are .458.  The 454 and 460 are pistol rounds I'm pretty sure so they would probably be .451/.452.

If I sound uncertain, it is because I'm going from what I read only.  I have no first hand experience with either of these cartridges.  Maybe someone else can confirm.

.451-.452 are for the 45L/C and 454 casull and the 460S&W. The 45-70 is a .458.  :D

Curtis is rat-on the money... A cruise through my loading manuals confirms that handgunners only shoot 'little' 45's (.452).  The 45-70 and all the big hurking elephant bashers are .458
I have one weapon and lots of toys.

All the rest are toys.

The 450 Marlin is also .458.  But I have not seen a pistol round at .458.

If you are looking for contender rounds alot of what has been noted 454.460s&w,450 cant be chamberd in a contender...On the other hand the encore can, and what dose it matter any .458 round can be made into a pistol when ,,,,,so lets see a 10" .458 win mag...
I have yet been able to shoot a 3 shot sub 1" group at 100 yards ...........on any deer!!!!!!

If thats what you want , Go buy a standard 45-70 barrel and a 458 winchester reamer and have at it. It aint all that hard. You will just need to monitor case head  pressure , even the encore has a limit to the case head thrust that it will handle before the frame gives . Read up on why they wont chammber the short magnums in a encore .
Maybe try the 416 jdj from SSK it may be enough for you and will probally match what the 458 would do from a short barrel.
