Gun owners line up for licenses

Mike Canady waited four hours in freezing weather, but still faced a long line before he could apply for a concealed-carry permit in Jackson County.
But the Kansas Citian wasn't complaining. He was smiling because Jackson County finally started to accept concealed-carry applications on Monday.
It's a great deal that concealed carry could go through, Canady said.
Jackson County is the last county in western Missouri to begin issuing the permits since the concealed-carry law passed last year. St. Louis County and city are the only areas in Missouri where permits are not available.
Officials said one man had waited overnight in his truck to be the first in line. By 4:30 p.m., the office had accepted about 20 applications, and an additional 50 residents were shivering outside waiting their turn.
One man draped a blanket over himself. Another resident went on a coffee run to help warm fellow gun owners.
Most waiting in line were men.
Ronda Montgomery, spokeswoman for the Jackson County sheriff's office, said fingerprinting the applicants was taking longer than anticipated.
Gary Rooks of Kansas City said he needed a concealed weapon on the job.
I do construction all over the country, and sometimes I'm in a neighborhood I don't care to be in, he said.
Concealed-carry permits are not issued immediately upon application. It is illegal to carry a concealed weapon before obtaining a permit.

To get a permit
Those seeking a concealed-carry permit in Jackson County may do so from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, excluding holidays, at the sheriff's office, 3310 N.E. Rennau Drive in Lee's Summit. They must bring:
Proof of Jackson County residency.
A copy of a firearms safety training course certificate.
A $38 check or money order payable to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
A $62 check or money order payable to the Jackson County sheriff's office. The office does not accept cash or credit cards. Neither fee is refundable.
Applicants will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Do not bring weapons.
