Whats everyones favorite powder for loading 45 ACP with cast bullets?

I shoot Bullseye for 200 gr. SWC. 4.0 gr for 700+ fps and 5.0 gr. for 830+ fps. CCI 200 primers, WCC cases, generally.

I will use either WW231, Unique or VihtaVuory-Oy powders (their N350 is a nice powder, measures quite consistenly, burns clean and gives me good accuracy). Mikey.

I use either Bullseye or 231. Bullseye seems to be a little better for the light target loads I shoot. Using Winchester WLP primers helps it burn cleaner. I'm using 200 grain SWCs. Load is 4.1 grains of Bullseye or 5.0 grains of 231.

I like Bullseye or WST for accurate cast loads and AA#5 for fast jkt loads. 3.5-4.0grns of BE or WST and a 200grn swc seems very accurate in my pistol. I still have a tiny bit of the discontinued Winchester Action Pistol that I like for fast 45acp loads.

I use Bullseye for all my range ammo in38/9mm/10mm/44Mag/45ACP and 45LC. It works well in all of the above applications, and as a bonus I only have to stock one pistol powder. I carry factory loads in my defensive/duty guns. I still have a bit of Unique/H110/2400/Red Dot/Green Dot/WW231/WW630 and Herco left over from the old days when I loaded everything I shot. Some of those powders are 30 yrs old! Guess I need to shoot it up one of these days-------sigh--------.

Unique. It's hard to beat in many cartridges. Yes there are cleaner powders out now days but if you wipe the feed ramp off when you are done shooting, it cleans right up. Someday I may try Universal. I tried Titegroup and didn't like it. I guess I will have to wait until I use up the other 5lbs of Unique I have on hand. 44 Man

I'd prefer Unique but it does not meter well for me so I'm using AA5 and it works just fine.

I've only been reloading for a year or two and have only tried Unique and Red Dot. Unique works great in my 1911. I mostly shoot 230gr LeadRN with 6.0 Unique or less. I tried 4.6 of Unique and the bullet wouldn't make it 50 yrds, you could practically watch the slug sailing to the target. 6.0gr is a good strong load but it hurts my hand after awhile and I shoot a lot of rounds when I go out, it's a long drive to BLM land from san diego. 5.6gr was just about right for me. I even shot a couple 9.0gr once, that was a bad idea, MY HAND HURT LIKE HECK! and the primers fell out and permanantly ruined the cases by making them expand at the base. I found 4.6 of Red Dot comparable to 6.0 of Unique. I also posted another forum about loads for 300gr slugs in 45ACP, I'd appreciate any help with that.

So far I`m using 4.3grs of 700-X, and it is working great with my RCBS 230gr lead RN cast bullets. O.A.L @ 1.270.

youngbutoldschool said he likes Unique. I did too for a long time. Shot thousands of rounds in IPSC competition with a 230 RNL and 6.0 gr. Unique. Also thought a Lewis Lead Remover was a good thing too. The good thing about competition is you learn stuff. For the last 10 years now I haven't used the Lewis Lead Remover once... because of better powder choices....and hard bullets.
My favorite powder now is Hodgdon Clays. It's as fast as Bullseye and without the smoke. Flame temp. is low so it doesn't cause leading. For some reason it produces lower felt recoil which enables a faster double tap which is all important in IPSC.

I have been very happy with Tightgroup. for me it is a very useful powder. It like my Springfield 1911 WW2 GI and my 1858 Remington with an R&D .45 Colt conversion. I t meters well and is pretty clean. Plus it is VERY inexpensive. At Sportsmans Ware house in ALbuquerque it is going for about 12.50 per pound. Lots of shots per pound. 4.5 of Tight Group and a 230 grain wheel weight Lee bullet and that Springer can shoot much better than me. But I do have a try some more powders. GOt to have a fair comparison

I have reevaluated my 45acp powder over the last 18 months. I shoot USPSA competitions and to keep costs down, I use hard cast bullets. I have tried W231, WST, Clays, Intl Clays, and Titegroup. I have settled in with Titegroup. Seems as accurate as the others. Measures well with my reloader. Cheap and goes a long way! Are there better powders, sure.....but for a budget minded shooter, it just makes too much sense.

I use 5.3 gr with the 200gr plated RN or 185 JHP.
Very accurate, clean and cheap.

I use Red Dot and a 230 grain LRN. Standard lg pistol primers (cci) it shoots clean with very little lead of powder fouling.

5.3 grains Universal Clays and a 230 grain TC cast pill. Runs great for IDPA and plinking.
