Contender 30-30/ recut to A.I, or NO?
« on: February 09, 2005, 10:40:05 AM »
I have been bouncing this around for a while.  I don't like to make hasty decisions....My 30-30 works just fine, but will I be happier with the AI?  Is it worth the change?  If I am going to do all this...with minimal increase, will I be happy or is it best to just go and get a 309 JDJ?  Recutting to AI is cerainly a lot cheaper....is it worth doing?

Go buy a 30/30 AI from Midway for $190.  If you like it better than your 30/30, sell your 30/30 for $175.  If you don't like it better, then sell the AI for $175.

This way you won't regret any decision and you won't "destroy" a barrel you're happy with.  And your total investment is only $15.

Robert,

I totally agree with Gregory.

Drop me an e-mail the next time you're going to be in the Portland area and I'll let you borrow my S-14 30-30 AI for a test drive.

If you are talking a 10" or 14" barrel, don't ruin it.  The cost will seriously out-weight the benefit, if any.  Go buy a 30 Herret barrel.    If you are talking a stock carbine barrel, you may benefit some, if sent to correct person to make the changes (like mike Bellm who will center chamber to bore) but it will cost you.  Once again, I would spend the money on another barrel.  My handloads for my 30-30 barrel are all I want to handle in a 10" contender.

Jeeeese, guys.  I have one of each and don't lay awake nights wondering what to do -- a 14" 30-30 with open sights and 14" 30-30AI with a scope.  I think the .30-30 in a handgun is just swell!
