New Cartridge fills 8mm/.338 Gap!
« on: February 06, 2003, 04:19:09 PM »
Hello all -
I'm a new poster, but old in all else.
Thought someone might be interested to hear of my new project - the .33 Bearcat.
I recently got a CZ24; turns out the groove diam. is .3305!
In talking to my brother (access to machinery), decided to make my very own UNIQUE cartridge for this rifle.
I'll rechamber to 57mm Ack. Imp., ream the throat for .330/250 bullet, lap ~ 4" of the bbl in front of the throat (tight there), and basically duplicate the .318 Westley-Richards.
Except I can load up to 300 gr bullets, as I have sized .338s down to .3295 already (as part of my test Program), and it works fine.
Seems I can get 2350 -2400 fps w/250 gr, expect 2150-2200 w/Speer 275s if I can find them, but probably won't use 300s - anything needs that much killing, I'd use my .375 H&H or .45-75 Sharps!
If I get any response from anyone, I'll keep y'all posted on the progress.

Thank God someone is finally doing something about the "gap" between the 8mm and the 338!

Not to dissuade you, but why not rechamber to the Westley Richards? or 338-06?  Basically they are ballistic twins, and factory ammo available for both.  Cases for reloading are easily available and properly headstamped.

It's neat to come up with a wildcat, no doubt!!! :D

Tnx for the rx  :D

I'm doing this CHEEP!!!!
My brother has the 57mm Imp body reamer, neck is oversized enough for .330 bullets, he also has a throating reamer, can contour rcvr, d&t,
1/2 octagon & taper bbl.

Cost will be rifle (cheep) + bases (cheep)+ reblue (cheep)

I already have a semi-finished Mann-style stock - add contrasting tip -
I'll have a full-stock, 24" bbl., custom rifle AND custom cartridge

And don't you just HATE all those gaps in the cartridge line-up?
I won't intentionally shoot your sacred cow.

Cheap is a pretty good word.  I like it a lot.  Not as much as FREE, but sometimes you have to take what you can get!!! :-D
