2nd/All around gun
« on: February 10, 2005, 01:42:49 AM »
I am buying a field gun for deer, and turkey.   There may the possiblity of using it for other animals such as duck or geese, but it will be primarily a turkey/deer gun.    I have decided to purchase a BPS.  It fits well, and works with my left handed handicap.  My question is either  a Camo 12ga with a 26" barrel, or the Camo NWTF 12ga with  a  24" barrel.    The NTWF includes a Hi Vis type of sight, and the receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope.   Price is about $60 more for the NWTF.     Any thoughts on the added features, and  the 24 vs 26 inch barrel.    I have ordered the 26" yesterday, but am 2nd guessing myself.   The $60 is not a concern.   Help soon please just in case I need to change my order.    Thanks again, Curly

I am generally speaking not a fan of short barrel shotguns. I tend to want mine on the long side of average. I used a full camo Rem 11-87 for many years and while it's great for turkey hunting and served me well for crow calling in thick stuff I never liked it for much else.

For doubles I go with 28" to 30" barrels on average and even have a 32" on a sporting clays gun. For pumps and semis I tend toward 26" or 28" but even here for pass shooting I like 30" barrels.

My vote would be for the 26". I'm not that familiar with the Browning pump but if barrels are interchangable then get what you  want and buy an extra barrel for other uses. That's the best way to do it.

Thanks for the reply.   I am leaning towards the 26" standard set up.   Not sure if I would use a scope, and can have the receiver drilled if necessary.   If I am lucky enough to find waterfowl hunting in my area, the 24" may be to short.   My o/u has 30" tubes, and should be about the same length as the 26".    The sights can be added also.     I am just intrigued by the 24" barrel.    I believe I can buy it as an afterthought accessory from Browning.    Now if I can just learn to be proficient with the pump.
